A Unidade de Ginecologia da Fundação Champalimaud (FC) triplica cirurgias robóticas

🤖 Desde 2017, a Unidade Multidisciplinar de Ginecologia da FC mais do que duplicou o volume anual de cirurgias robóticas, de 200 procedimentos em 2017‑2020, para 500 em 2020‑2025.

👉 A cirurgia robótica tornou-se uma prática consolidada em muitos cancros do útero, cancro do ovário em estadios iniciais e casos selecionados de cancro do colo do útero, permitindo incisões menores, menos dor e recuperação mais rápida.

👏 Este crescimento realça o compromisso da equipa com a prestação de cuidados de última geração em ginecologia oncológica e com os padrões internacionais de qualidade, consolidando o seu reconhecimento nacional como um programa de referência com vasta experiência na área.

Champalimaud Foundation’s (CF) Gynaecology Unit triples robotic surgery volume.

🤖 Since introducing robotic surgery in 2017, CF’s Multidisciplinary Gynaecology Unit has more than doubled its annual surgical volume, from 200 procedures in 2017‑2020 to 500 procedures in 2020‑2025.

👉 Robotic surgery has become a standard for many uterine cancers, early-stage ovarian cancer, and specific cervical cancer cases, offering women minimally invasive treatment with smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery.

👏 This growth reflects the team’s commitment to state-of-the-art oncologic gynaecology care and international quality standards, consolidating their national recognition as a reference programme with extensive expertise in the field.

A história de Leonor Beleza conta-nos como um telefonema pôs tudo em movimento. Quando António Champalimaud lhe perguntou se gostaria de presidir à Fundação que queria criar, a resposta de Leonor foi um imediato “Sim” mas sentiu o peso da confiança: “A nossa tarefa era perceber o que o Fundador poderia ter desejado, aceitando que este tinha colocado deliberadamente o futuro nas nossas mãos”.

Descreve o momento em que João Silveira Botelho sugeriu o nome “Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown” como decisivo e partilha como sentiu que “captava tudo: curiosidade, humildade, descoberta.”

Leonor Beleza’s story shows us how a single call set everything in motion.

When António Champalimaud asked if she would preside over the Foundation he planned to create, her answer was an immediate “Yes”, but she felt the weight of the trust: “Our task was to understand what the Founder might have wanted, while accepting that he had deliberately placed the future in our hands”.

She describes the moment João Silveira Botelho suggested the name “Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown” as defining and shares how she felt “it captured everything: curiosity, humility, discovery”.

Twenty years later, the CF is the result of teamwork, countless daily choices, perseverance, curiosity and humanity. What began with a blank page became an institution without limits to its ambition, that continues to transform lives.

A história de Megan Carey fala-nos de grandes sonhos e grandes ideias que se realizaram.

Quando Megan visitou Portugal pela primeira vez em 2005, mudar-se para Lisboa parecia-lhe algo muito pouco provável, mas que acabaria por se tornar realidade.

A sua entrevista para Investigadora Principal foi pouco convencional: uma cerimónia que contou com a presença do então Presidente da República, o que a deixou "tão impressionada quanto assustada". O dia terminou com uma boleia de mota, a primeira da sua vida, "um pequeno prenúncio de todas as aventuras que se seguiram".

Para representar o momento que melhor retrata o seu percurso (aqui), Megan escolheu uma foto onde aparece a dançar, a cantar e a rir com outros investigadores. "Construir uma instituição onde se faz boa investigação e publicar artigos de qualidade é a parte fácil. O difícil, e que a Fundação Champalimaud conseguiu, foi atrair pessoas com grandes sonhos, grandes ideias, dispostas a desafiarem-se.”

1️⃣9️⃣ Defining moments with Megan Carey

Megan Carey’s story tells us about big dreams and big ideas that came true.

When she visited Portugal for the first time in 2005, moving to Lisbon seemed very far from reality to her, but it turned out to be closer than she imagined.

Her interview for the role of Principal Investigator was unconventional: a ceremony attended by the then President of the Republic, leaving her “as impressed as she was terrified”. The day ended with a motorcycle ride, the first of her life, “a small prelude to all the adventures that followed”.

To represent the moment that best captures her journey (here), Megan reached for a photo of herself dancing, singing and laughing with other researchers. "Building a centre with good research, publishing nice papers is the easy part. What’s harder, and what the CF has achieved, is attracting people with big dreams, big ideas, who are willing to challenge themselves.”

A história de Zach Mainen relembra-nos que o futuro não é fixo, mas sim feito de contínuas adaptações.

Pensar no começo nunca é fácil, mas para Zach, que esteve presente desde o início, o antes e o depois da Fundação Champalimaud (FC) unem-se naturalmente. Aqueles primeiros dias foram “uma tela em branco, emocionante, incerta, mas cheia de potencial”!

Na altura, a FC ainda estava no IGC, e Zach lembra-se do jardim mesmo à frente do seu escritório, das animadas discussões científ**as e do sentimento de comunidade que ali começou. No entanto, a mudança para o novo edifício, já à beira do rio, marca o início de uma viagem muito maior.

A FC cresceu de um pequeno grupo para uma comunidade vibrante. Ainda assim, Zach reflete, “não parece totalmente diferente”, o espírito inicial mantém-se, ampliado, reformulado, e continuado por novas vozes.

1️⃣8️⃣ Then and now with Zachary Mainen

Zach Mainen’s story is a reminder that the future isn’t fixed, it’s built through continuous adaptation.

Thinking about beginnings is never easy, but for Zach, who has been here since day one, the past and present of the Champalimaud Foundation (CF) come together naturally. Those early days were full of possibilities: “It was a blank slate, exciting, uncertain, but full of potential”!

When he joined, back when CF was still based at the IGC, he remembers the park just outside his office, the lively scientific discussions and the sense of community that started there. But when the CF moved to its new building by the river it marked the beginning of a much bigger journey.

The CF grew from a handful of researchers into a thriving community. And yet, Zach reflects, “it doesn’t feel entirely different”. The spirit of those first years is still here, just expanded, reshaped, and carried forward with new voices.

A história de Maria João Villas-Boas está repleta de humor, alegria e orgulho.

Os primeiros dias na Fundação Champalimaud (FC) foram passados entre apenas sete pessoas “com imensa vontade de futuro”. Muitos anos depois, a FC continua a ser tão especial para ela, tanto que “não consigo imaginar sair”.

Na sua função multifacetada, acompanhou cerca de 17 mil visitantes ao Centro, e f**a radiante sempre que reencontra antigos visitantes que ainda recordam a sua experiência e o quão impactante foi para as suas vidas.

A olhar para os próximos 20 anos, Maria João tem “grande esperança que a FC continue a pensar no futuro de forma quase obsessiva” e deseja que esse futuro continue a abrir caminhos que nos permitam alcançar a fronteira dos nossos sonhos com perseverança.

1️⃣7️⃣ Then and now with Maria João Villas-Boas

Maria João Villas-Boas’s story is full of humour, joy and pride.

Her first days at the Champalimaud Foundation (CF) were spent among just seven people “with such desire for the future.” Many years later, the CF remains so special to her that she “can’t imagine leaving.”

In her multi-layered role, she has welcomed around 17,000 visitors to the Centre and she is overjoyed when she reconnects with former visitors who still remember their experience and how deeply it impacted them.

Looking to the next 20 years, Maria João has “great hope that the CF will continue to think about the future in an almost obsessive way” and wishes that this future will keep opening paths that allow us to reach the frontier of our dreams with perseverance.
