The Cardiovascular R&D Centre (UnIC, Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento Cardiovascular - www.unic.med.up.pt) was established in 1994 to fill the gap in translational research on cardiovascular disease. UnIC aims at high impact clinical research namely randomized controlled clinical trials and prospective clinical studies, as well as further technological development and biotechnology application in translational research, reinforcing partnerships with industry and international networks. Based on a dynamic research structure, national and international collaborations were established and are continuously encouraged, either with academia or with industry, enabling a self-sustainable strategy. Our strategy based on translational research, joins clinicians and fundamental researchers to pursue a common goal of unravelling cardiovascular disease pathophysiology and optimizing patient care. Presently, UnIC includes 136 researchers from several Departments of FMUP and Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de São João (CHUSJ), combining basic and clinical sciences to achieve a solid translational and integrative perspective, in a “bench to bedside and back again” approach. Thus, UnIC relies on the strong collaboration between researcher physicians from multiple medical specialities related to cardiovascular medicine such as cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, internal medicine and anaesthesiology, and biologists, biochemists, engineers, statisticians and other professionals fully committed to CVD research. The current research topics at UnIC are focused on: i) Heart failure; ii) Pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular function; iii) Myocardial remodelling and valvular heart disease; iv) Ischaemic coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis; and v) Technological and applied cardiovascular research. Moreover, we nurture lines of research in cerebrovascular pathology, ophthalmological involvement in cardiovascular disease, and early-life cardiovascular risk and disease. UnIC is also devoted to scientific initiation of young students and advanced education, hosting several post-graduation courses, as well as a Doctoral Programme in Cardiovascular Sciences and a Master Degree in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology. To improve population awareness on CVD and cardiovascular research, UnIC is committed to outreach and scientific dissemination actions, through its participation in educational projects directed to the public and partnerships with local authorities.
