Once you know what you want and what you don't want for the birth of your baby preparing or planning becomes simpler. Birth Goals need to be realistic, achievable and uniquely yours. Here is an example of one of my clients Goals.

#1 Being prepared as much as possible for birth
#2 Being able to overcome difficult situations
#3 Stress free no panic
#4 minimal pain and as natural as possible
#5 Healthy baby

I sit with the parents and go through each goal and we discuss how we can achieve these goals with practical skills , minimising risk and changing beliefs (with hypnosis) that are in line with achieving these goals.

Many people believe hypnosis means you are under the spell or control of another person and they can make you do anything they ask. It is usually because they saw people doing foolish things on TV or at a stage show clucking like chickens , behaving stupidly or stripping for the audience.

That is entertainment! It is all rather bu****it and most people are performing for the audience . In hypnobirthing there is only love respect and a desire to see you in control and calm and relaxed for each contraction. The suggestions given while you are in a deep state of relaxation must be a part of your belief system otherwise you will open your eyes and question what has been said! Hypnosis for birth means introducing positive suggestions while you are in the relaxed state which provides you confidence in preparing for the labour and birth of your baby.

In truth all hypnosis is self hypnosis and being in a Hypnotic state is simply being a in a relaxed zone, a focussed state of attention or a meditative state of awareness. Think of a time you you lost track of time doing a project or when you were so engrossed in a book you forgot where you were and before you realised it was getting dark. You are not asleep, you are not under anyone's control you are just in a deeply relaxed conscious state of awareness.

You can be guided into the trance state but you do it all yourself. I teach you how to drop into an instant state of relaxed conscious awareness and stay there every time you feel a strong sensation in your body ( like a contraction) and I teach your partner to give you suggestions to go deeper into relaxation and a few tips to keep you there!

All of this work might only be done for 30 seconds but what a great way to spend 30 seconds with your eyes closed focussing all your attention on your partner's touch or your partner's voice or your own breath.

Swollen t**s, sore shoulders, itchy belly, tight skin, cannot sleep comfortably, up 5 times a night to p*e, cankles, none of the maternity clothes fit , baby is playing football inside and sticking their elbow in your spleen all the time, cannot get out of a chair, cannot get into the car, cannot eat your favourite sushi , indigestion is killing you after dinner, tired all the time and cry every time you see a baby outfit in the store.

Can you relate?

We can take ourselves from a place of discomfort to a place of comfort for a short moment in time or even longer.

Listen to the Relaxing in a Rainbow and take time for yourself and your baby
Listen to the Place in Nature and have a break from the world around you

what else can you do to be more comfortable?

Rub your skin with a cold pressed belly oil
Use all the pillows and cushions
Put your feet up( literally)
Wear loose clothing and singlet tops with a built in shelf bra
Wear Fishermans pants that expand as your belly does
Float in a swimming pool
Kick your partner out of the bed and get a body pillow
Order the cooked sushi , the tofu inari or anything that is uncooked.

So you have been thinking about doing a Hypnobirthing course for a while now but you are worried what others will say, especially your midwife, doctor and family.

It is ok I know how you feel. I was the same in my pregnancy. The thing is if I had not done the Hypnobirthing course with an experienced practitioner my birth story would probably have looked very different.

I am now that practitioner and have worked with well over 2000 women teaching skills they can use for pregnancy, labour, birth and the newborn period.

I am a trained hypnotherapist, a Bowen Therapist, a pregnancy massage therapist and have worked in 8 countries as a hypnobirthing practitioner. I can also help you bring up the subject of hypnobirthing with your friends family and care providers so they can work with you to help you achieve your unique birth goals.

Hi Andy ,

We had a baby boy -). He weighed 4.2kg, born on 21st May ..drug free!

I found the labour difficult and several times wondered if I could do it - but I did! I wouldn't say it wasn't painful - I found the Hypnobirthing a fantastic coping strategy and am recommending you to all my friends! The doctor couldn't believe how short the labour was and almost didn't arrive in time
She broke my waters & put me on the drip at 8ish.I cried - that wasn't the way I wanted it to happen - I had no control I wanted nature to have a chance. Then the affirmation came to me "I am prepared for whatever turn my birthing may take". This helped gain composure and positivity again. I then just started focusing on the fact that I was now in control of my approach to the birth and needed to maintain positivity.

The doctor came back at 1pm and I'd only dilated 2 cm (I was 2 when I arrived in hospital due to a few surges the day before, then was 4cm by 1pm). This killed me because I was finding the surges very very intense by that stage. The Dr said that she's be back at 7pm for an expected delivery of 8pm that night. I didn't think I could last. I embraced the breathing and we had the affirmations playing constantly and Roberto was wonderful - but still I really started to wonder if I could do it. After each surge I would employ positive affirmations and that then got me back on track and ready for the next one.

I t had the urge to push around 2.45 ish and was worried as I though it was too early (as the Dr expected an 7-8pm delivery). But the midwife said to just go with my body and push if I needed too. This feeling was unbelievable - I couldn't have stopped if I tried! Then after what seemed like only about 10 pushes - he was born - with the Dr just making it!

He's just beautiful and we're so in love. I'm so glad I did your course and thank you for everything - I find it helps me in so many things (not just birth!)

Squatting is a big thing at the gym but so to for labour and sometimes birth too. It is also a super weird word if you say it a few times

Having strong legs is great for positioning yourself to encourage labour progression and allow you to be more comfortable.

If you haven't been hitting the gym in pregnancy it is ok. I can teach you how to do a supported squat a few different ways.

If you already have strong thighs I can show you a squat for labour and how your birth partner can help you relax deeply in a squatting position!

How awesome would that be?

Clarinha was born 10th July - 3.31kg and we love her so much
" Hi Andy, the day before the birth I was trying to bring on labour. I ate curry, took some naturopathic herbs for a bowel cleanse and visited the midwives for a cervical sweep.
4.30am the next morning I didn’t feel “right”.I went back to bed at 6am and took a heat pack because I was experiencing period pain sensations. At 7am I still didn’t know If I was in labour but kept heating up the heat pack and had sensations every 8 mins or so.
I decided to take a shower and keep the heat up on my back as the pain in my back was strong. The surges were every 2-3 mins and I decided to use the TENS machine. Well Rui offered the suggestion of the shower then the TENS.
At 9am Rui phoned the hospital and the midwives suggested giving me extra strong paracetamol. I did not want him to leave to get some and I said I really just want to go to the hospital.

At 9.40am we left for the hospital and I had to lie on my side in the back seat due to back pain. Arriving at hospital I needed to go to the toilet.I felt a lot of pressure. I then asked the midwives if I could use the Swiss ball and they decided to check me. I was 10cm dilated. The midwives offered me a little gas and Clarinha was born at 10.09am

I was the “talk of the Birthing suite” the midwives said the birth was amazing. Rui was “blown away” by the experience. Our baby was so alert. From the minute she was born she has been an angel, she feeds well sleeps well and has perfect skin. As it turns out she was posterior and that is why I had so much pain in my back!
I really enjoyed being able to put the skills you taught us into practice. Rui was the best birth support person EVER doing light touch massage and lots of deepening techniques for me during my surges. He also used your deeper massage technique for the pain in my back. I want to tell every pregnant women I see to get in touch with you!"

Choosing an Obstetric Doctor or Midwife is usually based on a recommendation of a friend or you already see them as your Gynaecologist or they are given to you by the hospital you are birthing in. Sometimes you do not meet the healthcare team until you enter the hospital.

Just like plumbers, electricians, chefs, accountants, builders and every other job on the planet you get people who are good at what they do and care about their client's or patient's wellbeing once the job is done. Then you get the others.

It is up to you and your birth partner to choose not to work with others. This starts in Pregnancy!
I can show you how to work with the good guys and reject the Others.
I can show you how to get the best from your health care providers and let go of others without fear you will not be given great care by upsetting a staff member.
Think of it as a tool in your toolkit of how to bring out the best in your healthcare providers for the super special day you meet your baby.

These are some of the things parents learn in a hospital birth class
Where to park the car
What lift to take
What forms to fill out on arrival
What drugs you can choose
When to come to hospital
How to bath a newborn
What to bring to wear in hospital
When it is too late to have an epidural
What birth looks like video
These don't look scary at all but what is scary is none of the above really teach you how to birth your baby and what your birth partner can do . They don't teach what birth is and THAT is really SCARY. Not knowing means you are at the mercy of circumstance.

Below are some of the things I teach in a NobleBirth Class
How to breathe to remain calm and relaxed
How to stay at home as long as you can
Positions to encourage labour progression
Birth partner skills to deepen your relaxation
What a contraction really is
How you can rapidly go into a state of deep relaxation for 60 seconds
How to pack for labour and the birth of your baby
How to avoid induction, epidural and episiotomy
What labour looks and sounds like when you are calm and relaxed
Does this sound good?

Of corse you should know where to park the car and what forms to bring and what hospital protocols are but understanding how to birth well is paramount.
