SKY Meeting VIII - Surgical Knowledge for Youth

We close our congress with a truly visionary topic, Space Surgery, an invitation to look beyond our planet and imagine the future of medicine among the stars.

As space missions become longer and human exploration reaches further, a crucial question arises: how can we ensure safe and effective surgical care beyond Earth?

This session explores the challenges and innovations of performing surgery in microgravity, as well as the technological and physiological adaptations that make it possible. A unique opportunity to dive into a field that blends science, innovation, and imagination.

We will have the opportunity to listen Prof. Dr. Thais Russomano, Founder and former Director of the Microgravity Centre at PUCRS (Brazil), PhD in Aerospace Medicine and Space Physiology, CEO of Innova Space, and elected member of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine. With the complementary voice of Dr. Rafael Fernandes, Neurosurgery resident at ULS São José (Lisbon), founder of the Medicopatias podcast, Assistant Professor of Space Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, and researcher at the Imperial Brain and Spine Initiative and the Centre for Aerospace Medicine (CEMA).

SKY Meeting VIII - Surgical Knowledge for Youth

We are delighted to announce our second Plenary Session, Born with a Battle, a deep dive into the world of Pediatric Surgery, focusing on congenital abdominal wall defects — conditions that challenge infants from the very first moments of life.

This session brings together two distinguished speakers: Dr. Tiago Tuna, Pediatric Surgeon at ULS São João and Visiting Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, and Dr. Inês Pessanha, Pediatric Surgeon at the Coimbra Pediatric Hospital and member of the Scientific Committee of the Journal of Liver Transplantation.

Combining clinical expertise with academic insight, Dr. Tuna and Dr. Pessanha will explore the complex surgical and developmental dimensions of these congenital conditions — from diagnosis to long-term care — shedding light on how collaboration and innovation continue to improve outcomes for the youngest patients.

We are honoured to present the Named Lecture of the SKY Meeting VIII — a special session dedicated to celebrating the remarkable career of Prof. Dr. Rui Vaz, a leading figure in Portuguese neurosurgery.

Former Director of the Neurosurgery Department at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João and Clinical Director of CUF Porto Hospital, Prof. Dr. Rui Vaz has been a driving force in advancing neurosurgical practice in Portugal. A true pioneer, he introduced deep brain stimulation techniques to the country in 2002, revolutionising the treatment of movement disorders and inspiring a new generation of surgeons.

Beyond his surgical excellence, Prof. Dr. Rui Vaz has played a vital role in bridging clinical innovation and research, collaborating closely with FEUP and i3S, where he has been a member of the Scientific Council since 2014. His distinguished career has also been recognised with the Bial Award for Clinical Medicine (Honourable Mention, 2010), among numerous leadership positions in national and international neurosurgical societies.

Join us in this session as we honour a lifetime of dedication, innovation, and leadership — a tribute to one of the most influential names in Portuguese neurosurgery.
