It’s that time of year! What do you do with those unwanted gifts of alcohol?? My first sober Christmas, a client came in with an amazing bottle of champagne-tentatively handed it to me- “I’m not sure if you’re drinking?” she said —I replied with “No, I am not at this time but thank you for thinking of me.” She reached in her bag and pulled out an amazing box of gourmet chocolates and handed it to me! I was so thankful!!! I know it doesn’t always happen that easy. Sometimes it’s a lot harder. Sometimes, the gift giver is a little more pushy. Stand your ground. Say no thank you! You will not regret it. If you still receive unwanted boozy gifts, quickly regift them off, leave them behind for a coworker or just drop it in the trash bin. You don’t need it and you won’t regret it. No means no! Take extra care or yourself. Phone a friend for support! Make your sobriety a priority. You’re worth it!

A good book, a little calm drink and (eye spy) a couple lap dogs. For the last couple months, I have been preparing for a powerlifting meet and my meet is on Saturday. Using some of my downtime today to rest, recover and prepare. All the fun things!

Enjoy your day…take extra care of yourself. Take some time to breathe and step out into nature. It’s okay to take a moment for yourself. I am thankful for my family, friends, my health and sobriety 🫶🏻

Got my morning started on the right foot! Love seeing the fog lifting through the skyline around my house! Got the crockpot going —it will be so nice to come home from work to a savory ham and bean soup. And I finished off a project. The color is fabulous! Getting into the gym and off to work… all the good things! And a new read to get started on! Wooohoooo

Shame… there’s no shame in asking for directions when you’re lost. There’s no shame in asking for help repairing your kitchen sink. There’s no shame in asking your gardener how to make your roses grow better. There’s no shame in asking your teacher how can I help my child to learn. There is no shame in asking your doctor for help when you’ve broken a bone. And there is no shame asking for help to kick an addictive substance. Shame was all that I experienced growing up with an alcoholic father. My family shamed him for his problem. My family operated solely from a place of shame and trauma. We never were allowed to speak about the problem..never allowed to let anyone in from the outside. When I decided to get sober, I refused to do it quietly. I refused to do it under the umbrella of shame. With 594 days of freedom, I continue to be proud of my time and sobriety. I hope to share my experience. And that is a small part of my “why” I wanted to study and become a recovery coach. A recovery coach can help you achieve and maintain sobriety. A coach will support you through victories and setbacks. In addition to providing emotional support, a recovery coach will offer practical assistance that could improve your day-to-day life. Recover out loud and be proud of every sober step you take! It only gets better!

“They’ve built their own prison. And so they exist in a state of schizophrenia where they are both guards and prisoners, and as a result, they no longer have, having been lobotomized, the capacity to leave the prison they’ve made or to even see it as a prison.” a friend shared this quote with me today and it really resonated. You can break free. You can choose to walk through that door…recovery is freedom. You choose to do the hard work and peace, happiness, fulfillment, finding your true self is the freedom.
