Hot summer days and UV
“In the summertime, when the weather is high …” as Mungo Jerry sang, way back in 1970.
Summer’s here. It’s holiday time and when the sun is out, it’s a pleasure to feel its heat on our skin.
As we all now know, there are hidden dangers of too much exposure to strong summer sunlight and its ultraviolet (UV) rays. Ooops, there goes another lobster!
However, the sun’s rays also contain frequencies that mitigate the harmful effects of UV. These are found in the near infra-red (NIR) part of the solar spectrum.
Incredibly, our bodies are designed to absorb and interact with light photons in the NIR range to produce a whole range of beneficial health effects.
For example, within our cells, these NIR photons interact with a photoreceptor in the mitochondria to activate increased production of ATP (cellular energy). Not only does it boost our energy, but NIR also stimulates increased production of melatonin – a powerful antioxidant, up to five times more potent than vitamin C.
NIR exposure creates a reservoir of melatonin within our cells, which can effectively mop up the damaging oxidising effects of UV. It neutralises the negative impact of UV while, at the same time, it doesn’t affect the positive action of UV in creating vitamin D within us. Go melatonin!
Additionally, during the day, the sun’s radiation has a higher proportion of NIR to UV in the early morning and late afternoon, while at midday and during early afternoon, UV predominates. This means that if we’re out and about in the sunlight in the morning and later afternoon, we are exposed to a higher proportion of NIR and we will benefit from increased melatonin antioxidant production in our cells. The morning exposure will prepare and protect us from the higher UV at midday and in the early afternoon, while the late afternoon exposure will repair any damage.
In natural circumstances, we are never exposed to UV without an excess of NIR, conferring natural protection from UV cellular damage. However, if you’re going out to enjoy the summer sunshine, it’s still a good idea to use sunscreen, ideally organic and mineral-based – you can check the ingredients of many products here.

Have a wonderful summer, “whatever the weather!”
