Essential oils are amazing for many reasons, one of which is their versatility. One oil can be used for many different reasons and has multiple benefits.

Recently, researchers evaluated peppermint essential oil for its ability to relieve anxiety related to acute coronary syndrome (ACS; a condition characterized by reduced blood flow in the coronary arteries that makes part of the heart muscle unable to function properly and becomes damaged). A significant number of people experience anxiety after developing ACS--up to 60%. Sixty-four people with ACS were randomly assigned to inhale peppermint essential oil or water and their anxiety state monitored. In the peppermint group, three drops of peppermint essential oil (diluted 1 drop of peppermint per 20 drops of sweet almond oil) were added to a cotton ball and placed on the participant's collar. The placebo group inhaled three drops of water added to a cotton ball and placed on the collar. Both groups inhaled gently for one hour. The peppermint group experienced significant reductions in anxiety levels after inhaling peppermint compared to the water group.

Dandruff is a skin condition of the scalp that causes itchiness and dry flaking. In addition to the physical symptoms, dandruff can be embarrassing and reduce self-esteem. Dandruff is caused by various factors, but yeasts (Malassezia and Candida species) play a significant role.

A recent review article concluded that essential oils "have tremendous potential to be developed as anti-dandruff products" due to their substantial antimicrobial properties. Among the essential oils, tea tree, rosemary, and lime were highlighted.

To create a healthy scalp mask, combine 30 mL of carrier oil (jojoba and coconut are good options), 5 mL of raw honey, 3 drops each of rosemary and tea tree essential oil, 2 drops of peppermint essential oil, and 1 drop of Virginia cedarwood essential oil. Stir well and massage gently into the scalp for a few minutes. Let it rest in the hair for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse off with water and a mild shampoo. Repeat 2 to 3 times weekly.

A recent study evaluated 369 commercial essential oil combinations for their support of healthy respiratory function during respiratory infections. Combined essential oils showed a synergistic antimicrobial effect, reduced toxicity, and improved anti-inflammatory properties. Five combinations were the most promising, including cypress/tea tree, hyssop/rosemary, marjoram/tea tree, oregano/tea tree, and myrtle/tea tree. These combinations can be diffused, steam inhaled, or diluted and applied to the chest to support open airways and healthy respiratory system function.

Fibromyalgia is a common chronic pain condition that reportedly affects 3%-6% of the world population. Over 75% of people with fibromyalgia are female. A small randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial found that the topical application of a commercial product--O24 Pain Neutralizer--containing rosemary EO, peppermint EO, camphor, eucalyptus EO, aloe vera, lemon EO, and orange EO (every four hours as needed for pain for four to six weeks) effectively managed FM pain.

To create a soothing blend, combine 20 drops of rosemary, 10 drops of peppermint, 5 drops of eucalyptus, 3 drops of orange, and 2 drops of tangerine in a 10 mL roller bottle. Fill the rest with a carrier oil. Apply to the desired area a few times daily.

*Remember that lemon oil is photosensitizing, so avoid UV rays on the application site for at least 12 hours after application.

Most people know that a massage can be relaxing and improve mood. However, an aromatic massage--one that includes essential oils and carrier oils--can profoundly influence the body, including nervous system function.

A clinical study found that a massage with lemongrass essential oil diluted in sweet almond oil harmonized the function of the nervous system and reduced diastolic blood pressure, which could improve emotional and stress states. Three groups were included in the study: lemongrass/sweet almond oil massage, sweet almond oil only massage, and massage without any oils. A 60-minute massage was performed once weekly for three weeks, which included the feet, legs, knee, abdomen, neck, face, and head.

Parosmia is a distorted sense of smell due to an inability of the brain to properly identify odors. Depending on the infection, this unpleasant condition is reported in about 10% of people after recovery. Unfortunately, parosmia also affects taste and smell of foods, which some describe as gasoline, rotten meat, garbage, or another unpleasant aroma and taste.

As I reported in a video nearly one year ago (https://www.facebook.com/AuthorScottAJohnson/videos/1795992107248593), olfactory training (also called smell therapy) may be a solution to post-infection parosmia. Olfactory training improves olfactory function discrimination and identification, functional connectivity within the olfactory system, and cognitive processing of incomplete sensory information. The key is PERSISTENCE!! According to one study, it may take several months of twice-daily olfactory training to see desired results.

The study recommends smelling different aromas in succession for at least 15 seconds, twice daily. Most commonly the following odors are recommended:
1) rose (phenyl ethyl alcohol), eucalyptus (eucalyptol), lemony/citrusy (citronellal), and clove (eugenol); 2) anise (trans-anethole), eucalyptus (eucalyptol), lemony/citrusy (citronellal), and clove (eugenol); or 3) twelve separate odors that are alternated twice every eight weeks: first phase--rose (phenyl ethyl alcohol), eucalyptus (eucalyptol), lemony/citrusy (citronellal), and clove (eugenol), second phase--cinnamon, thyme, chocolate, and peach, third phase: coffee, lavender, honey, and strawberry.

To use essential oils for olfactory training, do the following.

Weeks 1-4: Smell rose, eucalyptus, citronella, and clove for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 5-8: Smell fennel, cinnamon, thyme, and lemon for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 9-12: Smell rose, eucalyptus, citronella, and clove for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 13-16: Smell fennel, cinnamon, thyme, and lemon for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 17-20: Smell rose, eucalyptus, citronella, and clove for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 21-24: Smell fennel, cinnamon, thyme, and lemon for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 25-28: Smell rose, eucalyptus, citronella, and clove for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.
Weeks 29-32: Smell fennel, cinnamon, thyme, and lemon for 15-20 seconds, twice daily.

The oils can be smelled directly from the bottles, or apply 1-2 drops to cotton or gauze and smell from this (more complete aroma).

Painful conditions like fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis can significantly impact quality of life. Current options to treat these conditions mostly mask symptoms and do not resolve the root cause of the condition.

A recent review article evaluated the evidence of thirteen studies, most of which were clinical trials, regarding essential oil therapy for painful conditions. The conclusion of the study was that all but one of the trials showed essential oils to be effective. Commonly used oils included: osteoarthritis--lavender, ginger, rosemary, copaiba, peppermint, wintergreen; rheumatoid arthritis: lavender, juniper, ylang ylang, rosemary, marjoram, peppermint, eucalyptus; and fibromyalgia, eucalyptus, lemon, camphor, orange, rosemary, peppermint, lavender, rose, and chamomile. The oils were typically applied topically to the area of concern diluted in a carrier oil.

Carbon tetrachloride is an organic compound that was previously used in refrigerants, cleaning products, and fire extinguishers that has since been discontinued because of safety and environmental concerns. Exposure to high concentration of carbon tetrachloride can harm the central nervous system, liver, kidneys, thyroid, and reproductive organs. Carbon tetrachloride triggers oxidative stress by simultaneously increasing free radical production and reducing antioxidant enzyme activity. In addition, it can reduce testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and thyroid hormone production.

Parsley essential oil has been traditionally used to support healthy blood sugar levels, aid healthy immune function, and for digestive support. Research has revealed it is antioxidant, antimicrobial, balances immune function, and reduces inflammation. A preclinical study found that ingestion of parsley leaf essential oil reversed harm caused by carbon tetrachloride. The oil reduced oxidative stress, restored hormone levels (testosterone, FSH, LH, T3, fT3, T4, and fT4), and protected against hypogonadism by preserving thyroid function.
