*EPISODE 35*

*THE INSIDE JOB*

One of the speeches that helped me qualify for the 2020 World Championship of Public Speaking was inspired by a story i absolutely love.

A young boy was watching a man selling balloons on a street corner. He would release balloons of different colours, red, white, blue, yellow & green all filled with helium & they would fly way up into the sky.
All different & vibrant colours.

But he noticed one thing.
There were no black balloons.

And he was a black boy.

So he slowly walked up to the man, tugged at his shirt, looked up to him & asked,

“Sir, will a black balloon fly?”

The man, instinctively aware of what was in the boy’s heart, got on his knee & looked him straight in the eyes & said,

“Son, it doesn’t matter what colour the balloon is. It only matters what it’s got inside!”

Externals, while having their place, are not the ultimate determinants of success in an endeavour.

It’s what’s inside that counts!

Helium is lighter than air. The lighter the gas inside, the lighter the balloon & the easier it will fly.

It’s what’s inside that counts!

More often than not, you have more control over what’s inside than outside.

Every career or profession is fraught with unique challenges & circumstances.

You may not be able to control what happens outside, but you can control what happens inside you & ultimately this will determine how much greatness you can achieve through your work.

What is in your mind?
What is in your body?
What is in your heart?

Mind:

What knowledge, information & mental skills & discipline have you built into your mind? As opposed to ignorance, negativity & a fixed mindset.

Body:

How much health, physical strength & ability do you possess to get things done & be independent whenever you need to? The right nutrition, water & exercise.

Heart:

How much grit, determination, gratitude, love, vision & dreams do you harbour in your heart? As opposed to fear, bitterness, hopelessness & entitlement.

Work on your inside (mind, body, heart), what you can control, more than what’s outside & prove to the world that any ‘balloon’ can fly!
