Over the past few days I have been flooded with calls and emails regarding the out-of-control increases in property valuations in Johnson County. I hear you! Mine went up a big chunk and I had a couple tell me theirs shot up around $100K over the past two years!

This is ridiculous. These valuations are going to run people out of Johnson County. It is a back-door tax increase that we have been trying to prevent here at the State level. I have talked with a number of key people and Senators about this issue and there are some fixes in the works, but in the mean time you can file for a hearing to challenge your valuation. In most cases this will not cut in your favor. I suggest looking at the listed properties they used to compare your property to as a way to determine your property value, as part of the challenge. If they used larger or smaller homes, or much newer homes as a gauge...you can use that as a means to challenge their decision.

Also, I strongly suggest you contact your local elected officials and urge them to remain at the "revenue neutral rate" for their property taxes. If they do that...then they must adjust the mil levies downward to compensate for the increased valuations...and it will offset the increase tax burden you have.

We are very much aware of what is happening and are really upset by it. If we are to attract new residents, and keep the ones we have...we must not price people out of their homes...or make it impossible for new young families to afford to purchase a home. Property taxes matter...and it's time we reign them in somehow. There are strategies being discussed and hopefully we can continue to address this big problem at the State level.

Some great news from the Senate today. We passed the "Fairness in Women's Sports" bill with a veto proof majority! Here is a portion of the press release from the Senate President, Ty Masterson:

"For the third session in a row, the Kansas Senate has passed the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. It passed with 28 votes in support, a veto-proof majority.

Senator Renee Erickson spearheaded the debate and offered powerful remarks in support of the bill and in
defense of fairness for female athletes.

“The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act ensures that we continue to uphold Title IX and protect fair play for Kansas
girls. This is what Title IX has done for 50 years. We’re not the ones who changed anything about eligibility for women’s teams - KSHSHAA did that when they changed their policy in 2015,” Erickson said.

Erickson also addressed the lack of concern opponents of the bill had for women like swimmer Riley Gaines, who came to Kansas to testify in support of the bill.

“Opponents don’t seem concerned about the trophies, placements, and championships that will be lost by Kansas girls if we don’t pass this. They aren’t concerned mental health of girls who will be forced to undress around biological men. I’m not willing to wait until a Kansas girl is forced into this situation. And that is why I vote YES for the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act,” said Erickson in her Explanation of Vote.

With the House having already passed the legislation, HB 2238 now heads to the governor."

I ,of course, voted yes as well, and hope the Governor finally realizes that it's time she step up and protect all the women in Kansas by recognizing the need for this measure.
