This week, we introduce a colleague whose smile you cannot miss when you visit IOM Romania's Migrant Integration Centre in . Mónica embodies the spirit of inclusion and opportunity at the heart of IOM’s work.

“My name is Mónica, an I'm from Ecuador. Nine years ago, I began my migration journey after winning a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Romania. The first year was challenging because I had to learn Romanian, but this experience helped me better understand and connect with the local culture.

After completing my master’s degree, I continued with a PhD, and along the way I met my husband, a French man who also fell in love with Romania three years ago. Together, we have built our life here.

I work at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an experience that has allowed me to support other migrants navigating their own integration paths. Being able to contribute to a welcoming environment has been deeply meaningful to me.

Romania has offered me many opportunities for personal and professional growth, and I am grateful for how this journey has shaped my life.”

“Life changes. And I must embrace adaptability.”

When Tamara stepped onto the plane and touched down in Romania, she knew a new chapter had begun. Today, as an international student, Tamara's days are “busy, a bit complicated, but manageable” between classes, part‑time work, and new friendships.

As a child, Tamara dreamed of becoming a doctor, driven by a wish to care for people in need. “I want to bring change, no matter how small.” Leaving was an opportunity powered by goals, roots, and family support: “They helped me see I can do more if I set my mind to it.”

When starting from zero, she pauses, breathes, talks to God, and goes back to her drawing board. She protects her dignity by remembering who she is and where she comes from. Belonging now means “being comfortable with who you are, wherever you are.”

Family reunions moments are always joyful, even if the goodbyes tug at the heart afterward. And to anyone who’s never had to leave home, she offers this gentle encouragement: “Everything is possible for greater purposes. Never give up on your goals.”
