KITWE Teaching Hospital on the Copperbelt has recorded an increase in the number of cases of stroke, with 43 percent of the 500 patients attended to from January to August this year being young people.
Hospital urologist Bwalya Mulenga said in an interview that the health facility is attending to a rising number of stroke cases among people aged between 25 and 50 coming from different provinces.
Dr Mulenga attributed the surge in stroke cases among young people to HIV, syphilis, hypertension, renal problems, the use of contraceptives, and untreated sore throats.
“There is a serious rise in stroke cases among young people, who are representing 43 percent of the 500 people that have been attended to this year,” he said.
Dr Mulenga said the hospital initially used to attend to stroke among people aged 60 and above, unlike the current situation where people as young as 25 years old are having stroke.
She said adults aged over 60 are more likely to have stroke resulting from high blood pressure, which causes blood vessels to be stiff and makes the heart to work harder.
