During a special visit by Colgate-Palmolive to Iwacu Recovery Centre’s project, Hope for Recovery Christian School, Dr. Susan Gitau shared a powerful message: “If you have loved ones struggling with addiction, do not hate them. Love and support them on their recovery journey.” 💙

At Iwacu Recovery Centre (Kigali City, Kicukiro District), we support individuals battling alcoholism and substance addiction, while also caring for children from vulnerable families — many directly affected by drugs and alcohol.

Kigali, Rwanda – 27th August 2025 – The International Professional Counselors Centre (IPCC), Susan Gitau Counseling Foundation (SGCF), and Iwacu Recovery Centre (IRC) successfully hosted a Mindful Self-Compassion Training & Retreat in Kigali.

The two-day program brought together 25 participants from Rwanda and Kenya, equipping them with practical skills in trauma healing, self-compassion, and mindfulness. The retreat also promoted cultural exchange, addressed intergenerational trauma, and included visits to Genocide Memorial sites.

IRC hailed the event as a fruitful and transformative experience that will continue to impact communities across Africa.

Many of our team members are in recovery from substance addiction, and moments like this play a powerful role in the healing journey. Through yoga, we’re not just stretching our bodies—we’re building mental clarity, emotional strength, and a more positive mindset.

Wellness practices like these help improve brain readiness, decision-making, and overall wellbeing—for those in recovery and for staff alike.

At IRC, agriculture brings hope through occupational therapy, where people engage in what they love. We've planted various vegetables, now it's harvest time,truly a joyful mystery!

In the occupational approach, we focus on promoting the cultivation of essential crops, such as fruits and vegetables, in Agriculture. Through group sessions, our beneficiaries are educated on the harmful effects of alcohol abuse, a prevalent issue that severely impacts individuals in the villages. Many thanks to Live Well Rwanda for helping in implementing the project.
