HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE EMERGENCY? First aid: CAROTID MASSAGE.
Lie the patient flat on the floor with the head hyperextended [chin up]. Tilt the head towards the opposite side of the area to be massaged. Massage the area in the neck just below the angle of the jaw. Rubbing this area for ONLY 30 SECONDS MAXIMUM stimulates the nerves at the artery wall to slow down the heart rate.
WARNING: DO NOT MASSAGE MORE THAN 30 SECONDS. This may be a fatal maneuver for ordinary people. Too much rubbing may break any clot already present and may lead to a stroke when dislodged.
CALL FOR A PHYSICIAN BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THIS PROCEDURE for further management.
