Standing where The Beatles stood! More Beatles’ Ashram spam…I came all this way for the art, now you have to enjoy it with me. Swipe to your heart’s content 🤗

The energy here is unreal!

The Beatles’ Ashram (originally Chaurasi Kutia Ashram) was established by Yogi Maharishi as a training center for Transcendental Meditation teachers.

There are 84 dome-shaped meditation caves spread across the entire hillside (this place is massive)…84 symbolizing the 84 lakh (8.4 million) life forms a soul is believed to pass through before attaining liberation.

Practitioners would sit these caves inside for hours of silent meditation focusing on their personal mantra.

In 1968 The Beatles stayed at the ashram to study TM under Maharishi. They wrote many songs during this time there (like the one in this audio, it’s a good one!)

After a few months The Beatles left abruptly and Maharishi began moving operations elsewhere until it was abandoned and began falling into ruin.

It’s now back under the Indian Forest Department as part of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve.

Many artists and visitors have covered the ashram’s walls with graffiti, murals and street art turning it into a kind of open-air gallery celebrating the Beatles’ legacy.

Special place, it’s a shame it’s in ruins.

The splits don’t measure a yogi (boy how I wish I could do them though)

There are times when no amount of splits or handstands or ‘achievement’ on the mat can soothe what the heart has been holding

The mat and the practice change shape.

• When the body refuses to move all you can do is be still or horizontal

• When the mind spirals, we must focus on the breath as our anchor

• When we are hard on ourselves, Ahimsa, the principle of kindness and non-violence especially towards ourselves becomes the truest form of yoga we can practice.

Everything comes to serve us. As I grow as a teacher I turn more into a student, more clueless, feeling my way as I go along. I’m learning what awareness, humility and compassion in the practice truly means.

A friend once told me “what does your practice look like? How do you want others to feel? Share that.”

I want to do less and be more. As I’m challenged in my asana practice and in processing what I’ve held inside, I can feel what I want to share taking shape:

Helping others to feel more and tap into other parts of themselves rather than just bending into shapes.

There is already of enough of “doing” out there 🙏🏼

In the words of our teacher …I am you, you are me🪞Strangers are just friends you don’t know yet. Here are some of the wonderful souls I’ve met here, I can’t fit them all in one post. Learning asana and breathwork and all that is really just a tiny piece of this journey…you learn so much from each person you share the ashram with for a month. Everyone’s going their own way now, some staying back for more training. But last night we had an eye-gazing meditation together and tears were shed! That coupled with fighting for our lives together on the mat has bonded us for life. I’m going to miss you all, OM 🫶🏼
