πŸ«€VSD πŸ«€

{Ventricular septal defect}

_is an opening or hole (defect) in the wall (septum) separating the two lower chambers of the heart (ventricles).

_In most children, the cause isn't known. It's a very common type of heart defect

_Normally, the left side of the heart only pumps blood to the body, and the heart's right side only pumps blood to the lungs. In a child with VSD, blood can travel across the hole from the left pumping chamber (left ventricle) to the right pumping chamber (right ventricle) and out into the lung arteries. If the VSD is large, the extra blood being pumped into the lung arteries makes the heart and lungs work harder and the lungs can become congested.

πŸ›‘ Symptoms :

Symptoms of serious heart problems present at birth (congenital heart defects) often appear during the first few days, weeks or months of a child's life.

Symptoms of a ventricular septal defect (VSD) depend on the size of the hole and if there are any other heart problems. A small VSD may never cause symptoms.

In general, VSD symptoms in a baby may include:

Poor eating
Slow or no physical growth (failure to thrive)
Fast breathing or breathlessness
Easy tiring
Whooshing sound when listening to the heart with a stethoscope (heart murmur)

πŸ›‘ Symptoms of a ventricular septal defect in adults may include:

Shortness of breath, especially when exercising
Whooshing sound when listening to the heart with a stethoscope (heart murmur)

πŸ›‘ Causes :

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) occurs as the baby's heart is developing during pregnancy. The muscular wall separating the heart into left and right sides doesn't form fully, leaving one or more holes. The size of the hole or holes can vary.

πŸ›‘ Risk factors :

_Premature birth

_Down syndrome and other genetic conditions

_Family history of heart problems present at birth
(congenital heart defects)

πŸ›‘ Complications :

_Heart failure.

_Eisenmenger syndrome.

_Endocarditis.

_Other heart problems.

πŸ›‘ Treatment:

_Surgery :

Percutaneous VSD closure like this video ⬇️⬇️

_Medication :

1_Diuretic : furosemide (Lasix)

2_ACE inhibitor : Enalapril

πŸ›‘ Prevention:

_Get early prenatal care, even before you're pregnant

_Take a multivitamin with folic acid (B9).

_Avoid alcohol.

_Don't smoke or use illegal drugs.

_Get recommended vaccinations.

_Keep diabetes under control.

_Check with your provider before taking any medications.
