malaria is considered severe if there is parasitaemia plus at least one of the following clinical or laboratory danger signs / complications
🔹 Clinical criteria
Impaired consciousness
Repeated convulsions
Prostration
Inability to drink / feed / repeated vomiting (especially important in children)
Shock or circulatory collapse
Dark urine / hemoglobinuria
Unexplained spontaneous bleeding
Jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin) when accompanied by other severe signs or organ dysfunction
🔹 Laboratory criteria
Severe anaemia: hemoglobin (Hb) very low , Hb < 5 g/dL.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar):
blood glucose < (40 mg/dL)
Acidosis / metabolic acidosis
AKI
Hyperparasitemia
Pulmonary oedema
