Today while discussing with a friend, I was asked what are the top five things that I have learned from yoga. So, I decided to write them down and share it with you:
1. Never give up
What is the ”impossible” of today will be the” easy” of tomorrow. As long as we always get up when we fall down, dust ourselves of and keep comping back to what we set ourselves out to do – progress and growth is inevitable!
2. Focus on what you want
Regardless of what it is that we want to achieve, it is of importance to find that mental image that makes us feel good, feel stronger and empowered. By moving towards that which we DO want, instead of away from that which we DON’T want, we spend our energy more wisely and are much more likely to succeed.
3. Get comfortable being uncomfortable
At times we may find ourselves struggling to get to the next level – be it in our physical practice, our career or our relationships with other people. If we want to be or do something different than what we already are, it means that we need to change the way we act. The breaking of habits and creation of new patterns of being means to step into the unknown, and that may be uncomfortable. However, that is where we find the real growth. So in order to really grow, we need to keep taking that step out of our comfort zone and get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
4. Letting go
This is one of the clichés in yoga. Just let it go! And there is a reason for it being a cliché. There is a big wisdom in these few words. However, letting it go does not mean backing down or giving up. Letting go means to be present to what is and what challenges that arises in just this moment. It means to allow whatever is occurring to take place without resisting or trying to change it. It means to drop any concerns with the past or future and give it your all in the here and now.
5. Stop comparing yourself to other people
We are all walking down different roads. We have all been given different bodies and different strengths and weaknesses. In comparing ourselves with others, we will always be able to find someone who is stronger, faster and smarter. The same thing goes for the opposite. Therefore, if we want to find something real and lasting to guide us for continuous growth in the long run, the only person that it makes any sense to compare with is ourselves.
