The Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists is a global prize that recognizes excellence amongst young researchers. Co-funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Prize is awarded in December during Nobel week in Stockholm, Sweden to four young scientists for outstanding PhD thesis work in life science. Each year, a Grand Prize winner is selected from the applicants to receive $30,000 USD in prize money. The three other category winners are awarded $10,000 USD each for their accomplishments. In addition, all four winners of the Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists will be invited to Stockholm, Sweden in December to take part in in a unique week of events in honor of science – with the opportunity to meet with leading researchers in their field. The annual award ceremony and banquet is held in the original venue of the Nobel Prize festivities. The 2015 categories are:
• Cell and Molecular Biology
• Ecology and Environment
• Genomics and Proteomics
• Translational Medicine

Making time for your passions makes you a better researcher, finds Daniele Simoneschi, winner in the Molecular Medicine category of the & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists.

“Graduating in piano performance taught me how to survive grueling schedules and perform under pressure” says Daniele Simoneschi.

In his research, he is interested in the very details that dictate whether a cell becomes cancerous or not.

“Through painstaking molecular clockwork, I dissected one of the mechanisms of a specific type of , suggesting new strategies for the treatment and stratification of patients with this malignancy” says Daniele Simoneschi.

Daniele Simoneschi obtained a PhD degree from the at . He is now a research assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at NYU.

“It was the most inspiring, motivating and rewarding experience of my research career” says Prize category winner James Daly about his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

James Daly wins the Cell & Molecular Biology category of the Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists for his essay ‘Endosomes, receptors, and viruses’. He obtained a PhD degree from the University of Bristol and now has a Wellcome Early Career Award fellowship at King's College London.

Exploring the gut with “space probe cells”, and writing a great essay about it, won Florian Schmidt (ETH Zürich) the Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists.

He developed a breakthrough technology that records the interactions of microbiota in the gut noninvasively and further the understanding of gastrointestinal health.
