Yoga poses were developed in a specific way as to give your tissues a holistic workout. However, sometimes it's hard to copy the pose your teacher is doing - not only is it hard to spot all the little details that build a yoga asana. But also, your teacher is embodying the pose the way their own body allows them.

Our bodies are a celebration of uniqueness. Yet there are many similarities, and that's why we can talk about alignment rules. These rules were created so that our joints keep moving within their natural range of motion. Stressing out a joint with a movement it's not meant to perform can lead to damaging it.

Simple example? The knee joint. It's only meant to move backwards (flex), and maybe a little forward, without locking the knee, or overextending. It's not meant to be moved sideways or rotated. To keep the knee joint stable we engage our leg, this way the muscles around the knee joint keep it in check. It's important in poses like supine pigeon, where the pressure put on the ankle might translate into off-centre pressure on the knee instead of the hip ligaments that are supposed to be stretched in this asana. This is why we flex the ankle in supine pigeon - send the toes towards the knee and the heel in the opposite direction.

There's many such intricacies in yoga. The fastest way to make sure you're away of them? Ask your teacher for a one-on-one class.

Going through Yoga Teacher Training gave me so much in my personal yoga practice. Not only did I realize how bad my alignment had been before the training, I also understood the point of each pose. It was as if yoga became a new experience for me. And from then on, my personal practice brought about more progress. I became stronger and more flexible in my body (and in my life).

From then on, I'm a strong supporter of private classes with a teacher. We all have different bodies, and yoga as a physical activity is aimed at assisting each in a unique way. It's not about touching your toes, it's not about standing on your head. It's about what's good for your unique body, with the length of your arms, the location of your hip bones in the pelvis and so many other anatomical differences. With the musculature that you have right now, your current lifestyle, your age.

Yoga can be a wonderful companion throughout your life, changing as you change. But first, you need to learn your body, and create your version of yoga. The easiest and fastest way to do so is with a dedicated teacher.

Yoga is usually recommended by medical specialists as a safe physical activity to rejuvenate your body and help you come back to physical fitness after an injury in another sport. However, any physical activity - including yoga - can lead to injury if not approached mindfully.

How to stay injury-free in yoga?

Start with feeling into your body. A gentle stretch before your vinyasa flow can go a long way!

It can be as simple as pedaling your legs in Downward-Facing Dog or doing some organic movements in Cat-Cow.
