Now, we are moving on to the spices!

9. Native to SouthEast Asia, the Nutmeg tree is the source of the nutmeg spice. What does the nutmeg actually smell like? Common descriptions of nutmeg would be sweet spicy aromatic peppery woody. It is used to flavour many kinds of baked goods, confections and meat. Go find out for yourself what it smells like!

10. If you are a baker, you will definitely be familiar with this tree. The sweet spicy hot fragrance of cinnamon is emitted from the dried bark of the cinnamon tree. This power spice not only flavours both sweet and savoury foods, it is also found to have anti-viral properties! In Singapore, we can find this tree in Sentosa and Fort Canning.

3. Fort Canning Cannon Ball Tree. The lower part of the tree's massive trunk is lined with a mass of short woody branches bearing large showy flowers and large round fruits. The shape and size of the fruit look very much like cannonballs and thus giving rise to its name. The brightly coloured flowers are bisexual, fleshy, waxy and large, measuring about 12 cm across, it gives off a sweet and perfume-like fragrance.

4. Paper Bark Tree. Kampong Glam is named after this useful native tree, Paper Bark (Melaleuca cajuputi). Also known as the Gelam tree, it bears tiny, white to creamy-yellow flowers borne on a long spike in the shape of a bottle-brush. Its white papery bark may peel off in large flakes like sheets of paper. The leaves are used to distil cajeput oil or tea tree oil which has antiseptic uses, giving the tree a medicinal scent.
