A bunion is a painful bony bump that develops on the inner side of the big toe joint, usually due to changes in the alignment and structure of the foot.

This change in the natural alignment and structure of the foot could be hereditary or caused by previous foot injuries and underlying medical conditions. However, improper footwear with a narrow toe box or high heels can also worsen the development of bunions.

While bunions are generally harmless, they do not resolve on their own and tend to worsen over time, making early intervention crucial.

Conservative means such as footwear modifications, orthotics and pain medications can be used for early-stage bunions to provide symptomatic relief and prevent further disease progression.

For severe cases with intense pain and significant malalignment, bunion surgery remains the most effective way of treatment. This involves realigning the bone, ligaments and tendons so that the big toe can be brought back to its rightful position.

Wear and tear from degenerative arthritis or the sudden twisting of the knee during contact sports can cause damage to the meniscus, resulting in a meniscus tear.

With a torn meniscus, the knee may lose some of its natural shock-absorbing ability, which can result in pain, swelling, stiffness and a popping sound during movement.

Meniscus tears can occur in varying degrees of severity, ranging from a small, minor tear to a larger, complex tear, which would require different treatment care.

For minor tears, conservative treatments such as RICE therapy, pain relief medications, corticosteroid injections and physiotherapy can help to relieve symptoms.

However, if the tear is severe or conservative treatments have proven ineffective, meniscus surgery via a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach can be performed to restore function to the knee joint.

Shoulder dislocation occurs when the humerus (upper arm) bone is displaced from the shoulder socket, often associated with a forceful impact or injury to the shoulder.

A dislocated shoulder tends to present with intense pain, instability and a visible deformity.

Ankle dislocations occur when bones of the ankle joint are forcefully displaced from their normal position, resulting in severe pain, swelling, soreness and inability to bear weight on the affected ankle.

Treatment for ankle dislocations will vary depending on the alignment of the bones and stability of the ankle joint.

Mobility aids such as a short leg cast or walking boot are usually reserved for fractures with stable joint and no displaced bones.

For serious fractures in which bones are misaligned with unstable joint, surgical intervention that repositions the bone fragments and holds them in place with special screws and metal plates is necessary.

Knee ligaments are bands of connective tissue that help support the knee joint.

When there is a direct blow or sudden twist of the knee, especially for those who engage in sports that involve frequent pivoting, start-stop movements or sudden directional changes, knee ligament tears can occur.

Symptoms of a knee ligament tear include a popping sound at the time of injury, pain, swelling and instability of the knee joint.
