Physical activities or lifestyle habits that involve frequent use of the shoulder joint can contribute to the development of shoulder impingement.
Shoulder impingement, or swimmerโs shoulder, occurs when the top outer edge of the shoulder blade rubs against the rotator cuff, resulting in pain and reduced mobility of the shoulder joint.
Treatment in the form of prescribed anti-inflammatory medications and corticosteroid joint injections helps reduce pain and inflammation in the shoulder joint, and physiotherapy helps improve flexibility and stability of the shoulder joint.
In cases of severe shoulder impingement or where conservative treatments fail to suffice, surgery may be recommended.
