Gift of the Psoas

The psoas has always been a sticking point for me. It has eluded me for quite awhile, in terms of understanding them beyond the surface level and working with them more deeply and effectively.

Previously, although, I had come across many sources that cite the significance of the psoas and its role in the body on the emotional/energetical level, I was never able to connect with the psoas beyond it being simply a blood-red physical bundle of muscle that originates from the lumbar spine and inserts into the femur, together with the iliacus, via the front of the pelvis.

All I knew was that it was a strong hip flexor and a structure that I found often associated with many of my clients who experienced chronic lower back tension and discomfort.

I have been very curious, but until yesterday, was not able to pe*****te any deeper.

However, during my morning practice a few days ago, I finally felt an invitation from my body to connect more deeply with this part of my anatomy. Ah, what a blessing ๐Ÿ˜Œ Of course I accepted.

I was guided to first move in to the front of my hips, then up through the side of my belly, and finally, into the bundle of muscle that Iโ€™ve come to call the psoas - and this is what I experienced:

The psoas is the connection between the upper half of our body and its lower half. Meta-physically, this can be seen, felt and experienced as the connection between the aspect of our self that is able to connect with higher, more refined levels of intelligence and the aspect of our self that is rooted in the more earthly, raw and primal natures of our body and mind.

Embodying the psoas means appreciating the value, beauty and necessity that each of these parts bring to the overall healthy and balanced functioning of the whole.

We are an ecosystem that operates in a constantly evolving balance of forces from within and from the outside.

Just as the sky is not complete without the sea and vice versa, the human being would not be able to exist or function without the land that stands between, and in a way, is also a part of the sky and the sea.

By reconciling the perceived differences between our โ€œhigherโ€ and โ€œlowerโ€ natures and finding that balance, we can then perhaps appreciate a little bit more this structure we call the psoas and what it represents within the greater ecosystem that is our body.

Please let us know in the comments or DM if this resonates with you or if you have any other perspectives to share! We look forward to hearing from you ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Bringing a child into the world is one of natureโ€™s most amazing feats ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ When a pregnancy spans up to 10 months, it is only natural to expect that a womanโ€™s body requires ample time to recover its strength, mobility and function in the postpartum period.

Did you know that the postpartum period can be considered anywhere from between 12 weeks to 12 months after birth?

We invite our clients on their postpartum journey to be gentle on themselves in this period and to allow their bodies to guide them on their recovery - be it mentally, emotionally, or physically ๐Ÿ’•
#
In the first of a two-part series, let's summarise some of the physical changes which occur during pregnancy, and their postpartum effects.

Increased joint play: The hormone called relaxin is released at the beginning of pregnancy, with its production peaking at twelve weeks. It continues throughout the pregnancy to prepare the pelvic ligaments by allowing them to be more easily stretched for birth. However, it also affects other parts of the body like the knees and feet - this means that movements which were once easy to do, might be more challenging due to the changes in one's biomechanics. It can take up to 12 months postpartum for relaxin to return to pre-pregnancy levels, so do take care with resuming exercises after delivery.

Altered core strength and control: as the abdominal muscles stretch to accommodate the size of the growing baby, they can lose strength and tone. The diaphragm gets less mobile and affects breathing and posture. These changes often carry over to the postpartum period and sometimes require manual therapy in addition to strengthening exercises to recover their full function.

Changes to spinal posture and pelvic alignment: in addition to the above changes, the increasing bump size often causes the pelvis to tilt forward, putting extra stress on the sacroiliac joints (SIJ), p***c symphysis (at the front of the pelvis) and the lower back. It is not uncommon to experience muscle tightness in the mid-lower back, back/side of the ribs and front of the thighs.

All of us have an inner body and an outer body.

Most of us are familiar with our outer body - it is the body that we see in the mirror, in photographs and in our imagination when we close our eyes and imagine what our body looks like.

However, many of us have yet to connect with our inner body.

What is the inner body?

Just like the hydrostatic skeleton that an earthworm has (a flexible skeleton supported by fluid pressure, modulated by the layers of muscles within its body), we, too, possess a similar type of structure framework within our body.

This framework exists and functions between what we perceive as our outer body and the bony skeleton that forms the foundation upon which the other frameworks are overlaid.

So how do we get in touch or become aware of this inner body?

Often, the easiest way to connect with this body is through the parts of itself that has become โ€œstuckโ€ with the outer body.

These points are the parts of our inner body that are โ€œreaching outโ€ and wanting to make contact.

These โ€œstuckโ€ points often manifest as tender or โ€œtightโ€ spots along the length of our muscles, tendons or ligaments (aka soft-tissue structures).

How do we connect to our inner body through these spots?

One way, and often the easiest, is to apply a direct, but gentle pressure directly on the spot, then breathe, relax and observe how the body or/and mind responds.

It could be a tensing up of an area of the body, it could be a sensation of pain somewhere else in the body, it could be a breaking out in a bout of cold sweat, it could be a sucking in of a deeper breath, a sigh, a quiet yelp; it could be anything. Stay open and attentive, without the need to analyse or understand what is happening.

The understanding will eventually come, but during the process, just enjoy what your body has to express and listen to it as if it were your child, your spouse or a really good friend trying to tell you about something that has been bothering them for the longest time.

If you give this a go or have other perspectives to share, please let us know in the comments or DM. We always enjoy hearing from you.

The best posture is a healthy inner posture.

Just as the health of a tree is greatly dependent on its root system, the basis of good health in a human being is also greatly dependent on our belief and values system.

What we hold close, true and dear determines what we manifest in our reality, including our body.

Nourish your outer body, but donโ€™t forget to nourish your inner body! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

As a physiotherapist (and also as a mum of a four year old) who works with many clients in their pre and postpartum stages and beyond, I get to exchange many motherhood stories and parenting tips and hacks with them. Motherhood can get lonely at times and itโ€™s wonderful to be able to lean into other mothersโ€™ support, experience, or simply their presence and understanding. This shared denominator of being a mother brings us together, regardless of our backgrounds ๐ŸŒธ

I am excited to be co-hosting an intimate mumโ€™s circle with , where mothers from all walks of life are welcome to join and fill their own cups (away from the kid(s)!) for a few hours on a Sunday :) So if this is for you or someone you may know, please reach out or share the word ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Front body long; Back body strong.

Someone once commented to me that in spite of observing me to have a strong shell of a back, I was not afraid of showing the soft, vulnerable belly of my front. At the time of the comment, I didnโ€™t give it too much thought. However, as I explored this movement last night, it occured to me that as much as a strong back is requisite for protecting the soft front of a person in a defence/fetal position, a strong back is also required to support the opening of the superficial and deep front lines of the body. One cannot exist without the other. And in this context, strength is not measured in the amount of weight the back can pull, but by the amount of vulnerability it is able to support.

As always, Life is a work-in-progress and I am infinitely grateful to have a body that supports my learning ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Œ

P.s. This post is not about backbends/how far one can bend backwards, but simply about a desire to understand the human body better and to listen to and respect its nuances ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

As we approach the end of the year, we find it an ideal season to carve out some time for ourselves to take rest, reflect and recharge, giving us the opportunity to step into the new year with renewed vigour and fresh vision.

One of the tools we find useful in this process is renewing and deepening our own connection with our body.

Our physical body is not only intrinsically connected with our mind and emotions, but also a wonderhouse of skin, fascia, muscles, tendons and bones. This meat-and-bones bag is such an essential part of our day-to-day life, yet it is also often one of the most overlooked and taken-for-granted aspect of our life.

We do not need to wait for pain to strike before we seek healing and self-recovery can start from our own fingertips!

Coming up on the 18th of this month, .tara.flows will be offering a Self-Massage experience to connect you deeper with your body and promote wellness.

What you can expect:

* Breathing exercises for clarity and balance

* Guidance through simple yet invigorating self-massage techniques

* Use of tools to explore and release areas of tension

* Ethereal singing bath at the end!
