On 16 August, our first mini retreat-style event took place at Tea Time ่Œถไพ - combining relaxing ambience, wellness strategies and delicious food.

We practised tuning in to our body through mindful movement, activating our awareness and sense of balance.

We enhanced our appreciation of the ambience, using our 5 senses to soak in the relaxing vibes and warm comforting sips of Chinese tea.

We helped each other gain insights on how our daily habits affect our mood and energy.

As one participant said, "I'm not used to slowing down like this." Others agreed, life tends to be a constant hustle of responsibilities and numbing, automatic habits.

Yet, by the end of the session, they all felt the intentional slowing down gave them a much needed reset.

The common takeaway was to be more intentional, more mindful in their daily lives, and make better choices that balance their wellbeing.

I just concluded the 3rd run of my retreat last Sunday! ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿค—

Navigating life (especially in fast-paced cities like Singapore) can be stressful, exhausting and suffocating.

You might be one of those who go on overseas holidays to escape from the stress every now and then. But what happens after the trip? Back to the same stressful environment, back to the same old habits and unhealthy patterns.

That is why my retreats are NOT just a temporary escape. From the workshop contents to the leisure activities, every aspect encourages you to learn from the experience, so you return to your life with more awareness and more resilience.

Resurfacing this article from last year, because is an annual event affecting thousands of children and their parents.

Why are good grades so important?

"Because if I do badly,

๐Ÿ˜ข I'm disappointing my parents
๐Ÿ˜ข I'm wasting my parents' money (on tuition and special bootcamps to prep for PSLE)
๐Ÿ˜ข I won't have a good future or good career
๐Ÿ˜ข I AM A FAILURE."

These are exactly what the 12 yr olds are learning about themselves, when they see how much emphasis the adults place on the PSLE.

Parents, is that really what you want to teach your children?

And come on, look around you, how many adults actually credit their career achievements or life happiness to "my high score in PSLE, that set me up for lifetime success!"

Most children know that exams are necessary, or even helpful to prep them for the next phase of education. They just don't need it to come with such extreme pressure signalling "do well or die" mentality.

If you are a PSLE parent planning to take leave from work, do it to:

โ™ฅ๏ธ provide nutritious food for their brain and body
โ™ฅ๏ธ set up a clean, relaxing home environment to soothe their senses from all the stress
โ™ฅ๏ธ lend a listening ear for their difficult emotions
โ™ฅ๏ธ provide positive affirmations based on character strengths and effort (not based on their grades!)

We need BALANCE now more than ever.

The world is chaotic,

the economy is uncertain,

workplaces are constantly trying to squeeze more output with less resources,

our minds are feeling the strain, losing focus, merely "firefighting" but not solving any real problems,

our bodies are exhausted and health issues are hitting closer to home.

How can we emerge from these challenges, stronger and wiser?

How can we strive for a better life without losing ourselves in the process?

By going back to the basics,
connecting with nature and simple pleasures,

listening to our bodies, our inner voices and one another,

we regain our balance and return to our daily lives with more wisdom.

The things we see only when we slow down.

At one glance, it's just plants.

But when you take time to observe the details, you see different types of plants, different colours, shapes, sizes, textures, patterns, how they contrast or blend with one another, how they interact with the soil, the wind, the sun.

Humans are like that too, at one glance we all seem the same but actually we all come with different experiences, perspectives, strengths, shortcomings, we're constantly interacting with our environment etc.

No right no wrong, not good or bad. Just observing and wondering. Up to you what you make of it.

Started my weekend with a mindful walk and outdoor meditation.

I regularly walk around Yishun Pond by myself, but doing it with a group and practising in the garden is even more awesome!

My short answer is...

Find your balance.

I wish I can give you a beautiful post that allows you to plug-and-play the strategies and voila! your life magically transforms for the better, but the truth is, we all read and move on to something else faster than I can create that post.

What I can offer you, is a journey to experience for yourself, so you can reach ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ for your personal takeaways to bring back into your daily lives.

With that in mind, I created my signature retreat programme 3yrs ago. Every aspect of my retreat is an intentional choice to help you find your balance.

โŽ No luxury hotel, to keep it affordable and accessible for most working adults. shouldn't be only within reach for those who can splurge.

โ˜‘๏ธ Rooms are simple yet comfortable enough, teaching us not to take what we have for granted, and that we don't need a lot in order to live well. In fact, the more we have, the more we want, thus constantly feeling discontented and unhappy.

โŽ No fancy conference rooms or restaurants, because what's the point of being in the same settings as our usual city life? What would we learn?

โ˜‘๏ธ Relax in the Kampong-style dining hall and feel a sense of as you observe the clouds changing in the sky and plants swaying in the wind. Appreciate what nature gives to us, and watch how we make real and support each other as fellow humans, when technology/status/other worldly desires are set aside.

โ˜‘๏ธ The retreat programme allows you to cultivate the foundational attitudes of through various activities and guided reflections.

Wrapped up our Balance Retreat 2024 yesterday. It was a privilege to be able to journey with our participants, practise mindfulness and positive psychology together and grow our collective wisdom through group sharing/support for one another.

So heartwarming to read about the acts of kindness and appreciation for SMRT staff who had to manage crowds during the major disruption, as well as the engineers, technicians who worked round the clock to repair the tracks.

It was an unprecedented disruption over 6 days, but the people at SMRT and LTA did their very best to fix the problem as quickly and as effectively as they could, in sweltering heat and even while we slept.

Such news deserves to be circulated and given more attention.

Frequently connecting with feelings of gratitude/appreciation, showing kindness to others, and recognising others' efforts will help us to foster positive cultures and healthy state of mind.

What is one thing you're going to appreciate in this coming week?

They faced a mammoth task of guiding commuters and fixing rails, but acts of kindness from strangers made their work worthwhile.

I've been hearing of people who recently experienced
- abrupt retrenchment,
- physical health scares,
- mental health symptoms they never expected themselves to have,
- death of someone close to them,

and other forms of "wake-up call" that prompted a PAUSE, asking themselves...

THIS is already a good start, asking questions to reconnect with your inner self.

Better wellbeing and meaningful life starts from within YOU
โ˜€๏ธgain more awareness, clarity and resources for coping with life's challenges.

This is what I do everyday, at work and in my personal life. It doesn't mean I'm happy all the time, but it's a meaningful journey, a lifelong practice of balancing my wellbeing and helping others do so.

Planning and conducting a wellness retreat is just one of the ways I share these practices.

Mindful choices for better wellbeing โœจ๐Ÿ’กโœจโฌ‡๏ธ

I had some work to do this weekend.

Instead of working from home and doing the work in a miserable mood or being distracted by TV/BED/CHORES waiting to be done,

I went to the Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre near my home and felt more motivated in the presence of others who were also working / studying this weekend.

Bonus - it's right in the heart of nature, next to yishun pond. I walked mindfully around the pond on my way back, observing the sights and sounds (of plants, insects, chickens and monitor lizards). And absorbed some vitamin D at the same time.

Also practising of the desire to do everything according to "best standards".

โžก๏ธ it's ok, I have the points somewhere in my mind, more important to connect with the audience and dish out what's relevant in that moment

Dirty laundry piling up?
โžก๏ธ Do what I can, don't need to aim for empty basket all the time. Anyway we have more than enough clean clothes to wear ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hiding from the heat outside but still able to enjoy the greenery, with a book and healthy buckwheat tea.

"Jing si" ้™ๆ€ means quiet contemplation.

My favourite way to care for the mind.

Especially with the noisy lives we lead now...

"Noise" in the form of demands, expectations, advertisements, comments, social media, opinions, news, complaints, comparisons, self doubt, the list goes on ...

And yes, even during commute we are not spared from noise - frequent announcements, people talking nonstop and people watching videos without using earphones.
