While Stories By Children has ceased operation, we are glad our children writers ended on a high note with us. We look forward to a prize presentation ceremony in 2026 where our children writers' voices, their families and community partners, who played an important part in being good stewards of their voices, would be celebrated.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗤𝗖𝗘𝗖
The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) is the world’s oldest international schools’ writing competition, established in 1883 by the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS). Each year students from across the 56 Commonwealth nations submit essays exploring themes of global importance—fostering creativity, critical thinking and empathy.

Many former entrants have gone on to significant success. For example:

🩵 Lee Hsien Loong (Singapore’s Prime Minister) was a winner circa 1967 through the QCEC.

🩵 Elspeth Huxley (author of The Flame Trees of Thika) won first prize in 1924.

🩵 Mei Fong (Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist) was a winner in 1989.

This legacy underlines how the competition not only celebrates young writers, but nurtures voices who make an impact. Achieving an award in QCEC signifies that a student is among the top young writers across the Commonwealth and that their work resonates beyond the classroom.

It’s the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition season again! This year, we are preparing more children authors for the oldest writing competition in the world! 🌎

Looking forward to see them at their prime and gaining knowledge and wisdom on how they can positively contribute to real-world issues.

Most importantly, I pray the children have fun and feel confident at the end of the 8 week long exercise!

Collage-Inspired Autobiographies with Roald Dahl

It’s the March Holidays and we decided to take a spinoff from our usual humdrum of exam-focused writing.

Here, our children writers each created their own unique collage from newspaper cuttings. The theme? Anything that inspires you about your future dream job! 🤩

Then, we studied an excerpt from Roald Dahl’s Boy, and…

imagined we were now 45 years of age, and looking back on life, highlighting key incidences, like how Dahl would have written Boy.

Not an easy task indeed, as it requires a few creative turns in the brain and across mediums!

Looking forward to see what the children come out with in the next few weeks!

Based on a real experience, our child writer Faith Teo kickstarts 2025 with a story about a turtle named Michael Jackson. Lost he was for a whole year (who knows what he’s been through) and found, a year after in a forgotten corner of the school’s level 4 down water pipe.
