A liver abscess is an infection of the liver, characterised by a collection of pus.

It is most commonly caused by bacterial infections, but may also develop due to:

• Abdominal infection
• Blood infection
• Gallstones or bile duct infections
• Prior endoscopy or surgery of bile ducts
• Penetrating injury to the liver
• Parasites

If left untreated, a liver abscess can lead to life-threatening complications such as sepsis. Seek prompt treatment from a liver surgeon if you experience jaundice, fatigue, and nausea, especially when accompanied by pain in the upper/entire abdomen.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. When it is detected early and remains confined to the pancreas, without spread to surrounding organs, lymph nodes, or distant sites such as the liver or lungs, surgery offers the best chance of a potential cure.

In selected patients, minimally invasive surgery using laparoscopic or robotic techniques may be considered, offering improved recovery outcomes. Depending on the clinical situation, chemotherapy and radiation therapy may also be incorporated into the treatment plan.

𝗗𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗲𝗲 is an experienced pancreatic surgeon who had completed a complex surgical oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

An a**l fistula is an abnormal tract that connects the a**l ca**l to the skin around the a**s.

In many cases, it develops after an infection of the a**l glands, often in relation to an a**l abscess. That said, a fistula can sometimes form even without a preceding abscess.

A**l fistulas can also be linked to underlying conditions such as:

• Crohn’s disease
• Injury/trauma
• Tuberculosis
• Previous radiation treatment
• Cancer

If you’re experiencing recurrent pain or swelling near the a**s, especially with discharge of pus and/or blood, consult a colore**al specialist early.

Yellowing of the eyes or skin is the most recognisable sign of jaundice, but your body may also give other clues.

Look out for these other signs:

• Itchy skin (pruritus)
• Tea-coloured urine and pale stools
• Pain, discomfort, and bloatedness in the abdomen
• Fatigue, with loss of appetite and weight

When bile or bilirubin is not effectively cleared by the liver, or when its passage through the bile ducts into the intestines is obstructed, it can accumulate in the bloodstream and lead to jaundice.

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek early assessment with an experienced hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a group of conditions marked by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. The two main types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

With early treatment, many IBD patients can achieve long-term remission and lower the likelihood of complications, which can include:

• Bowel perforation
• Intra-abdominal infections with abscess and fistula formation
• Peria**l fistulas formation in Crohn's disease
• Narrowing and obstruction of the bowel
• Blood clots in veins and arteries
• Toxic megacolon (extreme, life-threatening inflammation and distention of the colon)

IBD can also increase the risk of developing colore**al or small intestinal cancer, making regular monitoring and timely care essential. To seek help from experienced colore**al specialist 𝗗𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝘄, reach out today.

02/02/2026

If you have hepatitis B or C, liver cirrhosis, or a family history of liver cancer, regular screening is a crucial step in detecting liver cancer early, before symptoms begin.

For hepatitis B/C carriers or patients with cirrhosis of any cause, the risk of developing liver cancer can be about 50–100 times higher.

𝗗𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗲𝗲 advises liver cancer screening every six months for individuals with these known risk factors.

A typical screening plan may include blood tests (Hepatitis B/C, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and liver function) alongside a liver ultrasound every six months to identify issues early.

26/01/2026

Diverticulitis is the inflammation or infection of small sac-like pouches (diverticuli) that can form in the wall of the colon.

Diverticuli is often asymptomatic but becomes more common with age, affecting those aged over 40.

When these pouches become inflamed and cause symptoms, prompt diagnosis is important to enable early treatment.

Severe diverticulitis, especially when accompanied by severe abdominal pain, high fever, or signs of sepsis, can lead to serious complications such as perforation, bowel obstruction, life-threatening haemorrhage, fistula formation, or abscesses.

If you are experiencing symptoms suggestive of diverticulitis, seek assessment from a colore**al specialist.

Liver cysts are fluid-filled sacs within the liver. In many cases, simple liver cysts are benign, cause no symptoms or complications, and do not typically require intervention.

However, surgery is recommended when the cysts becomes large, cause upper abdominal pain/bloatedness, are deemed complex or at risk of becoming malignant.

To remove part of the cyst wall or the whole cyst for treatment and diagnosis, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is commonly performed, with minimal pain and downtime as well as low chance of recurrence.

If you notice a lump over the liver area and develop severe pain or a persistent sense of fullness in the upper abdomen, consult a liver surgeon.
