Why You Get Heartburn After Exercise

Experiencing heartburn during or after a workout? Itโ€™s more common than you think and often linked to how your body responds to physical strain.

Exercise can increase pressure on the stomach, slow digestion, and affect the muscle that keeps acid in place, leading to reflux symptoms.

Common triggers include:

High-impact movements like running or jumping

Exercising on a full stomach

Reduced blood flow to digestion during intense activity

Straining or twisting movements that affect abdominal pressure

If heartburn occurs frequently during exercise, adjusting meal timing and workout intensity may help reduce symptoms.

Feeling faint or extremely tired during fasting is often brushed off as โ€œnormal.โ€ But persistent fatigue may be a sign that your body is not coping well with the demands of fasting.

Consider whether your meals between iftar and sahur are providing enough nourishment, whether you are staying adequately hydrated, and whether symptoms are continuing despite your efforts.

Healthy fasting should generally leave you feeling steady and able to function.
If fatigue persists, seeking medical advice can help ensure you remain well as you prepare for a meaningful and joyful Hari Raya.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet when detected early, it is highly treatable.

Screening can detect precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer, and early-stage disease often has no obvious symptoms. That is why timely screening matters, even if you feel well.

If you are aged 50 and above, or younger with a family history, speak to your doctor about appropriate screening options.

Early detection saves lives. Awareness is the first step.

Not feeling hungry during fasting does not always mean the gut is coping well.

In some cases, this sensation may be due to bloating, slowed digestion, or constipation rather than true satiety, especially when meals are large or hydration and fibre intake are inadequate.

Understanding gut signals helps prevent unnecessary discomfort during fasting.

Digestive changes should not be ignored. Those with sensitive or existing gut conditions may benefit from medical advice during fasting.

Fasting is sometimes compared to intermittent fasting trends, leading to the belief that it guarantees weight loss.

In reality, weight changes depend on overall eating patterns rather than fasting alone. Repeated cycles of restriction followed by overeating may strain digestion and make weight harder to stabilise.

Consistency, balanced meals, and gradual adjustments are better tolerated by the gut during fasting.

If you notice changes in digestive comfort, especially if you have existing gut sensitivities, it is important to pay attention to your body and seek medical advice when needed.

Big meals during the festive season can leave your stomach feeling heavy and bloated. In a recent Shin Min Daily News feature, we shared simple ways to ease discomfort without extreme "cleansing".

Try this after a heavy meal:
* Sip water through the day (avoid chugging)
* Take a light 10โ€“15 minute walk
* Return to balanced meals (veg + protein + whole grains)
* Increase fiber gradually. Sudden overload may worsen gas/bloating
* Avoid late-night heavy suppers to reduce reflux and gastric irritation

If bloating, reflux, or abdominal discomfort is frequent or persistent, itโ€™s worth seeking medical assessment.
