Safe toy for preschooler (3-5yo):

Toys should be large enough — at least 1¼ inches (3 centimeters) in diameter and 2¼ inches (6 centimeters) in length — so that they can't be swallowed or lodged in the airway.

Avoid marbles, coins, balls, and games with balls that are 1.75 inches (4.4 centimeters) in diameter or less because they can get stuck in the throat above the airway and make breathing difficult.

Battery-operated toys should have battery cases that secure with screws so that kids cannot detach them. Batteries and battery fluid pose serious risks, including choking, internal bleeding, and chemical burns.

Also make sure the toys do not have the sharp ends or small parts like eyes, wheels, or buttons that can be pulled loose strings longer than 7 inches (18 centimeters) parts that could pinch small fingers

Most riding toys can be used once a child is able to sit up well while unsupported — but check the manufacturer's recommendation. Riding toys like rocking horses and wagons should come with safety harnesses or straps and be stable and secure enough to prevent tipping.

Hand-me-down and homemade toys should be checked carefully. They may not have been tested for safety.

Stuffed animals and other toys that are sold or given away at carnivals, fairs, and in vending machines are not required to meet safety standards. Always check carnival toys carefully for loose parts and sharp edges before giving them to your children

Common injuries in children

Abrasions, cuts, scalds and burns, fingers caught in doors or drawers, fractures, dislocation of elbows or shoulders, bruises from knocks, head injuries from falls, eye injuries, swallowed objects, choking, accidental poisoning, foreign bodies lodged in the ears and nose eg nut, sweet etc

Always keep your child under closed supervision. Keeping a first aid kit and learning how to administer first aid could potentially help to minimise the extend of injury too.

What to do for a Nosebleed

Do have your kid tilt their head forward slightly, and then use a towel to pinch their nose tightly just below the nasal bone.

Do not allow your child to lean back. If they do, blood could go down their throat and into their stomach, which could make them feel nauseas or vomit. Discourage them from blowing their nose for several hours, as even a short, gentle blow can trigger the bleeding again.

Get help if the bleeding doesn't stop within 30 minutes or if your kid's nose looks out of place and you suspect that it's broken; head to the A&E

What do you need to store in the first aid box?🧰

First aid kit is a box or bag that has supplies to treat minor injuries such as cuts, burns, scrapes and bruises. Inside the box of first aid kit you need the essential kit of survival supplies, life-saving emergency supplies and convenience items like bug spray & cold flu medicines. Keep your first aid kit in a dry place and locked. Basic supplies you need to have are bandages, gloves, cotton, antiseptic, and first aid tape.

Why is it important to learn about first aid for kids?

This is a skill as a tool to help other people. To learn and understand about first aid means that you are careful, willing to help a victim or even a friend of you nearby. This allows children to be more aware and give them skills for themselves and others in case of emergency. As you tell your children that there might be some unwanted scenarios like when they fall from the swings or seeing their friends fall from the pavement, you can guide them about first help with the first aid kit they have in the box. Give a light example and try to play first aid games by doing a role play and give them basic kit like bandages.
