I recently had the opportunity to present on “Integrating Discipline-Specific Goals within Transdisciplinary DIRFloortime.” At the heart of our message was this: when we reach a high level of mastery in our own discipline, we naturally start to think and work in more transdisciplinary ways so that we can truly meet the child where they are developmentally, rather than working in parallel silos.

We highlighted that being transdisciplinary is not about “doing it all” or accepting a compromise in therapeutic standards. Instead, it sharpens our observation, clarifies when and why we refer to colleagues, and helps the whole team align around a shared developmental roadmap for the child. This is how we move toward genuinely holistic outcomes.

The response was very encouraging. Teams that are already deeply transdisciplinary, such as Rebecca School, shared that the talk validated their lived experience, and many attendees appreciated the practical strategies and video examples that showed what this can look like in real practice.

Over the past few days in New Jersey, We have tried almost every mode of public transport to get from place to place — interstate Amtrak, local light rail, PATH, NJ Transit trains, and even the most “mind-boggling” of all, the buses across different states. It has been both challenging and incredibly liberating to figure out how everything connects and to be able to move around freely just by understanding the system.

This made me think about many of the wonderfully visual, strongly neurodivergent individuals I’ve met who are absolute experts in public transport systems. I can now better understand why they treasure this “special power” so much and why they can talk about routes, maps, and schedules for hours. There is a real charm and dignity in being able to navigate the world independently — one train, one bus, and one connection at a time.

Why is language important for literacy development?

Language is the foundation for learning to read, write, understand, and express ideas. When children develop strong listening, comprehension, vocabulary, and expressive language skills, they are better prepared for literacy learning later on.

In this short video, Naomi and Kerensa share why language development matters and what parents should look out for in the early years.

Save this post if you’re supporting a late talker or a child with communication needs.

Just completed the CLASI – Ayres Sensory Integration® course!

Such a fun, energising class. So thankful for an OT (Emily Koh) who guided me through the trickier SI concepts — teamwork really makes learning richer.

And… a proud moment when our trainer, Elizabeth, President of ICEASI, said she was impressed with my SI knowledge as a speech therapist. Definitely one of those “hard work pays off” moments.

Feeling proud and very grateful 💛

It was a pleasure spending the morning at Odyssey Dempsey speaking with parents about speech and language development in the early years.

We explored:

What the difference is between speech and language

What key developmental milestones typically look like

And how children build communication skills through everyday interactions, play, and connection

I always enjoy these conversations with parents—because behind every question is a genuine desire to understand and support their child better.

I’m really looking forward to returning on 1 April for our next session, where we’ll focus on social-emotional development, communication beyond words, and the role of play in helping children grow—one of my favourite topics to speak about.

Thank you, Odyssey Dempsey, for the warm welcome and thoughtful engagement today. It’s always a joy working with schools that value the whole child 💚

A Full-Circle Moment at Last Week’s DIR Floortime Training 💛
One of the most unexpected and heartwarming surprises from last week’s training was seeing Hannah in the audience — someone who holds a very special place in my professional journey.
Hannah Huang was one of my student interns during her NUS Master of Speech Pathology placement. Even back then, she stood out. She was thoughtful, eager to learn, and deeply committed to understanding each child’s experiences. Our supervision dynamic felt natural from day one, and we kept in touch through the years as she transitioned into practice.
Fast forward to last week: she walked into my workshop as a therapist representing the organisation she has been with since graduation — and my heart skipped a beat.
What made it even more meaningful was being able to bring along the thank-you card she wrote for me five years ago. Yes… I kept it. And seeing her face light up when I showed it to her again was such a special moment — a reminder of why mentorship matters, and how the relationships we build in this field often continue long after the placement ends.
(📸 Photo: Hannah and I holding her original thank-you card!)
These full-circle encounters don’t happen often, but when they do, they reaffirm everything I love about this work — the continuity, the connection, and the privilege of watching young clinicians grow into confident practitioners.
Here’s to more moments like this, and to all the mentors and mentees who continue to shape our profession in ways big and small. 💛

DIR Floortime Training with Thye Hua Kuan Moral Charities — A Meaningful Return 💙

This training was extra special — a reunion with familiar faces and a reminder of how close-knit our therapy community is.

The highlight? The dedicated occupational therapists from the adult services team. Their curiosity and passion for relationship-based, sensory-informed work were deeply inspiring.

Adults with developmental challenges deserve approaches that go beyond behaviour — ones that honour connection, emotion, and shared meaning.

Here’s to supporting the therapists who make that possible — often quietly, always wholeheartedly. 🌱

DIR Floortime Training with Thye Hua Kuan Moral Charities — A Meaningful Return

Last week’s DIR Floortime training with Thye Hua Kuan Moral Charities was special in a way I didn’t quite expect. When I walked into the room, I was greeted by so many familiar faces — people I had crossed paths with years ago. It felt like a wonderful reunion and a reminder of how small and interconnected our community truly is.

What stood out most was the group of occupational therapists from the adult services team (supporting adults with developmental challenges). They planted themselves right in front of the room, fully present, soaking in every part of the discussion. Their goal was clear:
to deepen their understanding of relationship-based approaches, and to integrate sensory knowledge in a way that truly supports their clients’ ability to connect, engage, and function meaningfully in daily life.

Many adults in their care have long therapeutic histories—often shaped by behaviour-focused work and the technical use of reinforcers. Even when reinforcers fade out, the deeper layers of sensory processing, emotional connection, and shared attention still need intentional support. This is where the Floortime perspective offers fresh possibility, especially for a population that is often overlooked in developmental frameworks.

And here’s the part many don’t see:
While we talk often about caregivers of adults with developmental needs, we rarely acknowledge the therapists supporting them. Many of these therapists work quietly, sometimes feeling alone in their practice. There are limited programmes, limited training opportunities, and very few commercial tools designed for adults with developmental differences.

It can feel like they are asked to navigate without a map.

So seeing their curiosity, their questions, their passion for their clients — that was the real highlight of the day for me. Their commitment deserves more attention, more support, and more resources.

To the team: thank you for showing up so fully. I wish each of you the very best as you use these ideas in your practice, and I’m excited to walk alongside you in the next stage of your learning journey.

Throwback to the Thailand DIRFloortime conference — a week of learning, reconnecting with friends, and plenty of fun. Feeling inspired by the Thai professionals who travelled from across the country, stayed fully engaged despite language barriers, and are bringing DIRFloortime back to their universities and communities. Cheering them on as they continue growing neurodiversity-affirming support for children and families.

Feeling so enriched after a few very full days at the Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implants (APSCI). ❤️‍🩹👂

I spent the week soaking up the latest updates in hearing science, chatting with audiologists and colleagues about best practices, and dreaming about how we can keep improving support for children and adults with hearing loss in Singapore.

And honestly… the best parts were the little moments — catching up with old friends, making new ones, and realising again how small (and lovely!) our island community really is.

A huge thank you to Cochlear for sponsoring this trip and taking such amazing care of all of us. Their warmth and attention to detail made the whole experience feel like being hosted by friends, not just sponsors. 💛

I had the privilege of attending the Advancing Autism Support: Supporting Neurodiversity Conference in Thailand this week — an inspiring gathering centered on advancing DIRFloortime practice and understanding neurodiversity.

It was a full day immersed in learning, listening to Jeff Guenzel, CEO of ICDL, model how to teach Floortime in such a deeply thoughtful yet practical way. I came away reflecting on how to distill complex ideas into simpler, more accessible messages — helping parents, educators, and professionals truly learn rather than just hear.

Beyond the sessions, the evening along the Chao Phraya River with Dr Kingkaew and her team was unforgettable. Good food, great conversations, and laughter under the stars — with the tide so high that sitting on the top deck felt like we could almost touch the bridge as we passed under it!

Grateful for the learning, the connections, and the renewed sense of purpose in supporting neurodiverse children and their families.
