βThe ward is like a second family to us nurses. As much as we look out and care for our patients, they also care for us. If they do not see us for some time, they will ask for us and tell us that they miss us when we are back at work. Iβve always encouraged my patients not to lose hope, and in whatever they do, they wonβt be alone.β
Since 2013, Mai has walked alongside patients on their healing journeys at IMH. In 2018, she introduced handicraft-making as an activity to patients in recovery wards. Initially, Mai faced some resistance from patients as they didnβt think they had the necessary skills to pick up craft-making. But Mai did not give up, and customised the activities to each patientβs strengths, helping them discover their hidden potential.
Over time, Mai also expanded the types of crafts to include diamond painting, resin coasters, crocheted accessories and more, telling a story of progress with every handmade piece. With patience and belief in her patients, Mai celebrated every small victory and guided them through challenges, helping them finish what they started. Seeing how far her patients have come β their improved functionality and growing confidence in themselves and their abilities β inspires her to keep learning and finding ways to enhance their care.
This year, IMHβs Senior Enrolled Nurse Mai Nilar Tin Win received the prestigious Tan Chin Tuan Nursing Award for her exceptional care and transformative impact. Established by the D.S. Lee Foundation in 2006, this national award represents the highest honour for Enrolled Nurses committed to advancing the nursing profession.
Congratulations Mai! You represent the heart of NHG Nursing β advancing care, inspiring hope, making IMH and NHG Health incredibly proud.
