β€œThe ward is like a second family to us nurses. As much as we look out and care for our patients, they also care for us. If they do not see us for some time, they will ask for us and tell us that they miss us when we are back at work. I’ve always encouraged my patients not to lose hope, and in whatever they do, they won’t be alone.”

Since 2013, Mai has walked alongside patients on their healing journeys at IMH. In 2018, she introduced handicraft-making as an activity to patients in recovery wards. Initially, Mai faced some resistance from patients as they didn’t think they had the necessary skills to pick up craft-making. But Mai did not give up, and customised the activities to each patient’s strengths, helping them discover their hidden potential.

Over time, Mai also expanded the types of crafts to include diamond painting, resin coasters, crocheted accessories and more, telling a story of progress with every handmade piece. With patience and belief in her patients, Mai celebrated every small victory and guided them through challenges, helping them finish what they started. Seeing how far her patients have come – their improved functionality and growing confidence in themselves and their abilities – inspires her to keep learning and finding ways to enhance their care.

This year, IMH’s Senior Enrolled Nurse Mai Nilar Tin Win received the prestigious Tan Chin Tuan Nursing Award for her exceptional care and transformative impact. Established by the D.S. Lee Foundation in 2006, this national award represents the highest honour for Enrolled Nurses committed to advancing the nursing profession.

Congratulations Mai! You represent the heart of NHG Nursing – advancing care, inspiring hope, making IMH and NHG Health incredibly proud.

In forensic psychiatry, fitness to plead is about whether a person is mentally capable of understanding what’s happening in court: from the charges they face, to giving instructions to their lawyer, or even following the proceedings. 🧠 At its heart, it’s about fairness and giving everyone a chance to be heard.

As we prepare for a leadership transition on 1 Feb 2026, we extend our appreciation to A/Prof Daniel Fung for his steady stewardship as CEO since 2021 - and look forward to his continued contributions in a new capacity.

We're also pleased to welcome Dr Jamie Mervyn Lim, who will step into the CEO position and steer IMH into its next phase.

We look forward to a new chapter of continued collaboration, innovation and commitment to supporting mental health in Singapore.

Associate Professor Daniel Fung, CEO of the Institute of Mental Health Singapore(IMH), will be handing over the reins to Dr Jamie Mervyn Lim, who has been appointed CEO-Designate with effect from 19 January 2026, and will officially assume the role on 1 February 2026. Dr Lim will conclude his tenure as CEO of Ren Ci Hospital on 18 January 2026.

Bringing extensive leadership experience across acute and community care, Dr Lim has driven major milestones at Ren Ci over the past three years. He was previously COO of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (2015–2022).

We thank Associate Professor Daniel Fung, who has led IMH with heart, dedication and vision since 2021. A champion for a whole-of-society approach to mental health, his leadership has strengthened IMH’s role as NHG Health’s specialist centre for psychiatric care in Singapore.

Congratulations Dr Lim on the new role, and thank you A/Prof Fung for your leadership!

Here’s to continued progress in Singapore’s mental health landscape!

Depression doesn't always appear overnight. Sometimes, it builds up quietly.

In Singapore, 1 in 16 adults have experienced major depressive disorder. For some, it starts as a milder form called subsyndromal depression (SSD). People who have faced difficult experiences in childhood (known as adverse childhood experiences) may also find it harder to manage emotions and relationships, increasing their risk of depression.

Researchers at IMH are testing to see if boosting these individuals' emotional regulation and interpersonal skills can make a difference. Their new study uses i-STAIR, an online psychological intervention originally developed in the US, to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.

IMH researchers have modified the programme and aim to explore its effectiveness in helping people with adverse childhood experiences and subsyndromal depression to manage stress and emotions, build healthier connections, and possibly prevent depression.
