Extending Care from Fatherhood to the Frontlines

A doctor by day and a family man by night and on the weekends, Registrar Dr. Lu is an incessant care provider to the patients at Ang Mo Kio – Thye Hua Kwan Hospital and the people around him.

Recounting a case that left a lasting impression on him – a middle-aged stroke patient who progressed from bedridden to being able to sit upright on a plane back home to India – Dr. Lu emphasises that a bedside care as a doctor in the hospital, a significant part of his job is helping patients access resources to live independently.

From Pioneering Nitec Nursing Student to Trailblazing Nursing Leader

Congratulations to our Assistant Director (Nursing Education) Jocelyn Ng for being inducted to the President’s Challenge ITE Inspire Fellowship!

Jocelyn started her career journey as an enrolled nurse at AMK – THKH, recalling her grandfather’s rehabilitation journey giving her “the first tinkle” to be a part of healthcare. After taking a study break and another stint as a nurse educator at a nursing home, she found herself drawn back to AMK – THKH twice. Today, Jocelyn is the Assistant Nursing Director (Nursing Education) at AMK – THKH, where she collaborates with the nursing leaders and multi-disciplinary teams to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development. She also analyses our nurses’ learning needs and develops programmes to uplift their competence. Over the years, Jocelyn has also participated in multiple workgroups and sat in various committees, including for WorldSkills Singapore.

Since graduating from the first Nitec Nursing cohort, Jocelyn has also attained a Diploma in Nursing, an Advanced Diploma in Gerontology, a Bachelor in Nursing, and a master’s in education and has dedicated herself to advancing eldercare in Singapore, receiving numerous awards for her contributions throughout her career. With the $10,000 award from the Fellowship, Jocelyn endeavours to launch a dynamic online platform that bridges the gap between ITE students, graduates, and alumni in the healthcare industry.

Behind every patient’s step and smile restored is a team of Allied Health professionals who walk the recovery journey together.

Last Friday, we celebrated our physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians, therapy assistants, medical social workers and pharmacists who help our patients regain independence at home and in the community. ❤️💙🤍

Announcing AMK – THKH’s latest music video, ‘Handwash’!

Could you memorise the 7 steps of handwashing by heart? While it might be an afterthought for many of us, but for our nurses and clinicians, this is a crucial protocol for patient safety and infection control.

Our nurse manager Evon and her daughter, both pop music lovers, came up with lyrics about handwashing over a weekend. Then, they churned the melody with AI until they found a tune catchy enough for the ward nurses to remember. The music video now plays routinely on our temi robot in the wards as an upbeat reminder to handwash rigorously with soap, in accordance to the 5 moments of hand hygiene and 7 steps of handwashing.

Give this music video a watch and listen – caution, you might wash your hands very frequently!

This week, our hospital is a little more festive as we celebrate Singapore’s 60th birthday with our patients.

From red-and-white decorations to the distribution of care packs lovingly prepared by our volunteers, we’re marking this special occasion with small acts of joy because healing happens not just through medicine, but through moments of warmth and connection too.

Here’s to unity, resilience, and the kampung spirit that keeps us strong. MAJULAH SINGAPURA.
