Why Respite Care is Surging in Singapore
- by Allan Lee, COO CSM Academy International

Respite care is experiencing a noticeable surge in Singapore, driven by a combination of demographic shifts, caregiver pressures, and evolving healthcare needs.

One of the primary factors is Singapore’s rapidly ageing population. By 2030, one in four Singaporeans is expected to be aged 65 and above, significantly increasing the demand for long-term care and support services. As more seniors require assistance with daily living activities, families are increasingly taking on caregiving roles—often without formal training or adequate support.

At the same time, caregiving itself is becoming more complex. Many caregivers today are part of the “sandwich generation,” balancing full-time employment, family responsibilities, and caregiving duties. Research shows that nearly half of older caregivers in Singapore are still working, while managing daily care responsibilities. This dual burden contributes to high levels of stress, fatigue, and burnout, making respite care not just helpful, but essential.

Another key driver is the growing recognition of caregiver well-being. Studies indicate that a significant proportion of caregivers experience high stress levels due to the demands of caregiving. As awareness increases, more families are turning to respite care as a practical solution to maintain both caregiver health and care quality.

Government support has also played a role in boosting uptake. In 2025 alone, more than 14,600 caregivers of seniors in Singapore benefited from subsidised respite care services, reflecting both rising demand and improved accessibility. Enhancements to home-based and community care services continue to make respite care more available and flexible.

Ultimately, the surge in respite care reflects a broader shift in Singapore’s healthcare landscape—from focusing solely on patients to supporting caregivers as well. As the nation continues to age, respite care will remain a critical pillar in ensuring sustainable, compassionate care for all.

Respite Care Explained
- by Allan Lee, COO CSM Academy International

Respite care is a short-term care service designed to give primary caregivers a temporary break from their caregiving responsibilities. It is most commonly used when caring for elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, or patients with chronic illnesses or dementia who require ongoing support and supervision.

Caregiving, while meaningful, can be physically and emotionally demanding. Over time, continuous caregiving without rest may lead to burnout, stress, and even health issues for the caregiver. Respite care provides relief by ensuring that the person receiving care continues to be supported in a safe and professional environment while the caregiver takes time to rest, attend to personal matters, or simply recharge.

Respite care can be delivered in various settings. It may take place at home, where a trained & qualified caregiver temporarily steps in, or at a healthcare facility such as a nursing home or day care centre. Services typically include assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, feeding, medication reminders, and companionship. Depending on the needs of the care recipient, respite care can last for a few hours, several days, or even longer.

Importantly, respite care is not just beneficial for caregivers—it also supports the well-being of the care recipient. It introduces them to new social interactions and environments, which can enhance their emotional and mental health.

In today’s ageing society, respite care plays a vital role in sustaining long-term caregiving. It allows caregivers to continue providing quality care without compromising their own well-being. Ultimately, respite care is not a luxury, but a necessary support system that ensures both caregivers and care recipients can thrive.

WORLD BIPOLAR DAY - 30th MARCH
- sharing by Allan LEE, COO CSM Academy International
============
Bipolar disorder entered my life at the peak of my career in the media industry—quietly, without warning. At first, I didn’t understand what was happening. My moods shifted unpredictably, sleep became rare, my appetite changed, and slowly, it began to affect everything—my work, my judgement, and my relationships with colleagues.

It didn’t stop there. My family felt it too. My behaviour became erratic and difficult to understand, and the stability I once had started to slip away. Eventually, I reached a breaking point. I made two attempts on my life, both times stopped by observant security guards who stepped in when I needed it most. Looking back, those moments were turning points—interventions that gave me another chance when I couldn’t see one for myself.

After that, I underwent mandatory psychiatric treatment and a year of counselling. Recovery was not immediate, and it was far from easy. Along the way, I lost my marriage, relationships, and a sense of who I used to be. There were days that felt endless, filled with heaviness and doubt, where simply getting through each day was a struggle.

But even in those darkest times, I held onto one truth: I was not alone. My immediate family stood by me without hesitation. They never gave up on me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. That became my anchor—the reminder that if they could still see hope in me, I could try to find it too.

It has now been nine years. The journey hasn’t been perfect, and there are still moments when I feel close to slipping. But I’ve learned to recognise those signs, to pause, and to remind myself how far I’ve come. I know I don’t want to return to that place again.

Today, I am still rebuilding—myself, my purpose, and my future. Recovery is not about going back to who I was, but about becoming someone stronger, more aware, and more compassionate. And as long as I keep moving forward, one day at a time, that is enough.
