Unlocking the world of Parkinson’s disease that’s hidden from the human eye, using !

For Assistant Professor Chao Yinxia, Junior Principal Investigator at NNI and Dr Jackwee Lim of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Google’s AI system has opened new doors to discovery in structural biology.

With AlphaFold’s AI-based structure modelling capabilities, the researchers can view a complete model of the STIP1 protein and understand how it functions in the human body – providing new insights into future strategies to help with early detection, diagnosis and potentially even a cure for Parkinson’s Disease.

Discover how AI is supporting Parkinson’s Disease research at NNI in this video, featuring Dr Chao and Dr Lim: https://youtu.be/RNysX62I3pw?si=7W-GXmMA_kLtSBRQ

Dr. Jackwee Lim, Senior Scientist at A*STAR is pioneering a breakthrough in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease. By mapping the 3D structure of STIP1 prote...

This is no rookie mistake – one of NNI’s clinical research coordinators (CRCs), Cherlyn Joyce Lee Xuan Yi, took home the Rookie of the Year Award at the SingHealth CRC Day’s Impact Awards on Wednesday!

CRC Day 2026 gathered clinical research coordinators from across SingHealth institutions to celebrate the work of CRCs and recognise those who have positively influenced their peers through the Impact Awards. The Rookie of the Year Award commends outstanding junior CRCs with under two years of service.

As part of the NNI team that recruits participants for Parkinson’s Disease research studies under Prof Tan Eng King, Cherlyn’s insights on research workflows, proactive contributions and work efficiency have helped her team’s efforts in recruiting more than 300 research participants last year, benefitting the studies significantly.

Congratulations, Cherlyn!

Congratulations to Dr Nicole Keong and Assoc Prof Deidre De Silva for being recognised at last week’s Centre for Clinician-Scientist Development (CCSD) & Dean’s Celebration Dinner by Duke-NUS Medical School! 🎉

Dr Nicole Keong received the Clinician Researcher Advancement Funding Talent Scheme (CRAFTS) Award, which supports outstanding and talented clinician researchers who are on the research track at SingHealth/Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. Dr Keong’s team has developed a new way of classifying brain tissue using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to create distinct tissue signatures that can forecast a patient’s clinical journey ahead of time. With this, they hope to help more patients achieve their fullest recovery potential.

As a member of CCSD faculty, Assoc Prof Deidre De Silva was appreciated for her invaluable contributions to their programmes. Her generosity in sharing knowledge and her commitment to advancing the field continue to inspire the communities we serve.

Congratulations once again, and we are grateful for the impact they continue to make! ❤️

The progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in affected patient brains is one of the pathological features of Parkinson’s disease, the second most common human neurodegenerative disease. Although the detailed pathogenesis accounting for dopaminergic neuron degeneration in Parkinson’s disease is still unclear, the advancement of stem cell approaches has shown promise for Parkinson’s disease research and therapy.

Researchers from National Neuroscience Institute and Duke-NUS Medical School discussed the practical approaches and potential applications of induced pluripotent stem cell techniques for generating and differentiating dopaminergic neurons from induced pluripotent stem cells.

They concluded that the discovery of current stem cell techniques for deriving induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from differentiated cells and further differentiation into distinct lineages of cells has opened new avenues of research, including in the field of neurobiology.

A flower bouquet for your loved one, and a gift of support for patients with neurological conditions 💐

At the SingHealth Cluster Charity Bazaar on Wednesday, colleagues from across SingHealth institutions took home ready-made bouquets – some even tried their hand at crafting their own bouquets! Just as these forever flowers will stay with their recipients for a long time, each donation for the bouquets leaves a lasting impact on the patients that the NNI Fund supports.

A little goes a long way – contributions to the NNI Fund helps our neuroscience research, education and patient care programmes to continue blooming, offering hope and transforming the lives of patients with neurological conditions.

Want to make a gift? Visit the NNI Fund page for more information.
