VO2 Max can be thought of as your aerobic power, or your maximal oxygen uptake. It is a measure of expired gases - Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, as you exert effort on either a treadmill or a bike.

As your exercise intensity increases, so does your oxygen consumption, but at some point, your oxygen intake will plateau. This would put your body in an anaerobic state. Thus, your VO2 Max is the highest rate at which your body is able to consume oxygen.
