“Human beings are the only species that deliberately deprive themselves of sleep for no apparent gain.”

Professor Matthew Walker's statement underscores a unique aspect of human behaviour - our tendency to willingly sacrifice sleep without clear immediate benefits. This phenomenon is particularly interesting in the context of modern lifestyles, where societal demands, work pressures, and technology often contribute to sleep deprivation.

Unlike other species, humans seem to override their innate biological need for sufficient sleep due to various factors such as work commitments, social activities, or even the availability of 24/7 entertainment.

Sleep deprivation has well-documented consequences, ranging from impaired cognitive function and weakened immune response to an increased risk of chronic health conditions.

For some, Dry January serves as an opportunity to reassess their relationship with alcohol. For others, it can be a chance to give their body (and budget) a break after the festive season. Regardless of the reason, there are a handful of health benefits from even taking just one month off the booze...

Better sleep - Alcohol is known to disrupt sleep and inhibits REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Reducing alcohol intake can lead to better rest, improving energy levels.

Improved blood pressure - Regular heavy drinking has been linked to high blood pressure.

Liver Recovery - Healing of the liver can begin just a few days after you stop drinking, as the organ is self-healing (like your skin).

Weight Loss - Alcoholic beverages are often high in calories. Limiting alcohol can aid in weight management by reducing overall calorie intake.

Strengthened Immune System - By reducing or eliminating alcohol, you support the immune system in functioning optimally, contributing to better overall health.

Re-evaluated relationship with alcohol - Cutting back on alcohol opens the door to a healthier perspective, encouraging a more mindful and balanced relationship with drinking. It's a positive step towards better choices for overall well-being.

Wellbeing tips for this festive season – part II (from our resident organisational psychologist, Ella Hutton)

Is your Christmas to-do list naughty or nice?

She's making a list, checking it twice... but wait, is that list naughty or nice?

I love a good old brain dump by writing a to-do list, but sometimes this asks more and more of us, while highlighting all the things we haven't done. If this jingles any bells, it may be time to try an accompanying 'ta da' list, where you take a moment to reflect on what you have and small .
This might not just be the things you've ticked off the to-do-list, but noticing all the day-to-day things you're managing and giving yourself credit for them, such as getting through a tough meeting or speaking calmly to your child when you feel tense. Maintaining perspective is key - this can help our brains override the natural tendency to keep running on the Christmas treadmill of constantly planning the next thing and skipping over the successes. So, what's on your ta-da list today?

Wishing all a happy holiday season. It’s been an incredible year with many of our clients seeing great successes. We look forward to propelling our clients well into the sixth in the new year.

14/12/2023

Take this time to and yourself for new challenges in 2024. Here are my 3 tips to keep you healthy both physically and mentally during this period of festivities:

1. The holiday season brings increased contact with others, and that can lead to a higher likelihood of contracting the flu, and other respiratory infections. If you haven’t already had your flu jab, you may want to consider having one before your travels or before the party season begins.

Take profit from this quieter period at work to schedule your check-ups and / or health screening early next year. It makes a difference to start the year on the right foot. Lastly, don’t let the festivities disrupt your routine; stay on top of your medication.

2. Moderation for good sleep and good health
Increased night time social activities, and indulging in alcohol and large meals can negatively impact sleep quality. Being aware of situations or environments that may prompt you to indulge more than you had intended helps to moderate intake closer to bedtime hours.

3. Keep good social company
Loneliness and social isolation can have significant effects on an individual's and . Research has shown that these factors are associated with various adverse health outcomes, including greater odds of early mortality, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological disorders. Stay close to friends and / or family, if they are near you. Alternatively, working with the and helping others in need, especially during this time, can be rewarding. You may discover a new gift that keeps on giving.

Just TWO tips for everyone during this time of the year when we are surrounded by our favourite seasonal goodies. Let’s not be too harsh on ourselves; tis the season to be jolly!

1. Practice the 80-20 rule, and allow yourself the occasional indulgence!

The 80-20 rule is a flexible long-term approach to good eating habits which emphasises on moderation and flexibility in food choices. It promotes a balanced, and sustainable way of eating, allowing you to maintain a while still being able to indulge occasionally.

80% of the time:
Focus on nutritious, wholesome, and nourishing foods which are minimally processed. Eat a rainbow of colours from each of the four main food groups: whole grains / starchy vegetables, fruits, vegetables, and/or lean protein. Eat healthy oils or fats e.g. olive oil or avocados in moderation.

20% of the time:
Allow yourself the flexibility to indulge in your favourite treats. Just ensure that they make up no more than 20% of your overall diet.

2. Pace yourself with the 0-10 hunger scale, engage your senses, and regulate your body's satiety cues.

The hunger scale graphic depicted is taken from University of California, Berkeley.

Stay within 4-7 on the hunger scale as much as possible.

Start eating at 3-4
At this level, it will be easier for you to be more mindful about what to eat, rather than pushing the body towards extreme hunger which tends to lead people to make very poor food choices.

Stop eating at 6 – 7
Enjoy the festive cheer, and use the conversations in the room or around the table to also pause and check in with your hunger cues - especially pre-eating and at mid-way.

"Your health account, your bank account, they're the same thing. The more you put in, the more you can take out."

Jack LaLanne's wisdom reminds us that both health and wealth operate on the principle of investment. Just like financial success, it takes effort and care to ensure we make the most of our greatest asset - our body!
Consider every nutrient-rich meal, every workout, every moment of self-care as a deposit into your health account. The more you invest in your well-being, the greater the returns in terms of vitality, resilience, and overall happiness.

Remember, you have the power to shape your health and wealth simultaneously. It's not just about living longer; it's about living better. 🌿💚
