"I was happy with her, and she's still relatively babyish in some ways. She's obviously out of a proper racehorse, and at times she's more like a racehorse than an eventhorse. She's very easy to become excitable. On the whole, she did very well. We could have probably had her a little bit quieter, perhaps a bit more work, but once we're up and in the more open work, I thought that's where she started to breathe, and I think she progressed as the test went on. I felt like she let me in a lot more as we got further on through the test. You can only ride what you have underneath you. I felt like I was brave enough that once she'd had her first spook, I sort of put my hands down and forward and said, go, and she responded very well."
—Oliver Townend and Cooley Rosalent took over the overnight lead at Defender Burghley Horse Trials after dressage with a career best score of 22.

"[The test was] probably better than expected, but I know that he has got very good work in him. He's been ridden and produced the last couple of years by the best event rider in the world, Pippa Funnell, and he is beautifully schooled. She has an amazing ability of the horses never having a bad experience in a main arena. So as much as his weakness would be that he's still a little bit weak in his frame and his physique, and also he gets very excited with atmosphere… I knew it's all in there. [But] it takes so much brain work. The three days of being here, it is a massive part of it and every moment you're on the horse. I don't chat to my mates. I'd never get my phone out my pocket, you know, nothing like that. You have to stay with his brain the whole time. He's incredibly sensitive. I was just so delighted that he was as happy and as rideable as he was. There's definitely a couple of little things, rider errors, [in the test]—I think I did six strides of rein back. But not a moment I thought, oh, God, that's bad. And so, yeah, I don't want another go anyway. I will take that."
—Piggy March on MCS Maverick, overnight leaders at Burghley Horse Trials on a score of 25.7 in dressage. March took over the ride of MCS Maverick from Pippa Funnell in 2025.

“The goal was to shave off as many seconds as possible around every corner. I’ve had him for a little over a year now, and he is only nine so still a little on the young side. I quickly learned he’s going to be a fantastic speed horse. He’s got a really good, natural ground speed, which is very helpful. He also doesn’t spend a lot of time in the air. I know I can kind of turn into the jumps, and he’s right there with me.”

“Honestly, it’s hard to put into words. To become the youngest LGCT Champion ever is something I could only dream of. This season has been full of incredible moments, and to stand here at the end of it all with this title is unbelievable. It’s a reward for so much hard work from my whole team, my horses, and everyone who supports me.”

‘I am still under the impression that there is nothing alive quite so beautiful as a horse’

‘A horse doesn’t care how much you know until he knows how much you care. Put your hand on your horse and your heart in your hand’

The horse is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature, Eohippus, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began domesticating horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC.
