🩸 November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a condition when your blood sugar (glucose) is too high and it happens when your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or any at all.

Understanding the different types is the first step towards awareness and management.
1. Diabetes Type 1
An autoimmune condition where the body mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in the pancreas
2. Diabetes Type 2
It develops when the body either doesn't use insulin well (insulin resistance) or can't produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal.
3. Gestational diabetes
It develops during pregnancy, which usually resolves after delivery but increases the mother's and baby's risk for developing Diabetes type 2 later.

🩺 Early detection = better control.

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and a major, independent risk factor for stroke. AFib causes an irregular heartbeat, which can lead to blood clots forming in the heart. These clots can travel to the brain and cause a severe stroke.

Take the 30-Second Challenge:
1. Find your pulse on your wrist or neck.
2. Count the beats for 30 seconds (or feel for irregularity).
3. If it feels wildly irregular, very fast, or fluttering, make an appointment to see your doctor!

Early detection of an arrhythmia allows for treatment that can significantly lower your stroke risk. Be proactive about your heart health!

Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) is an under-recognized but important risk factor for heart disease, especially in people with a family history or unexplained early cardiovascular events.

Testing for Lp(a) may help identify at-risk individuals who would otherwise be missed by standard cholesterol screening.

Lipoprotein (a) affects your high cholesterol risk. A cardiologist from The Harley Street Heart & Vascular Centre explains more on the topic.
