Primary liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Asia. Speakers at last weekend’s APASL-CEVHAP-WHA Symposium ‘Responding to the Social, Cultural and Economic Impacts of Viral Hepatitis’ in Taipei called for system-level understanding of the social and public health implications of viral hepatitis infection, which if not properly addressed may undermine its diagnosis, treatment and care ‒ and that of its long-term sequela, liver cancer..

In talks with the regional media outlet, Healthcare Asia, Co-chair, Prof Saeed Hamid highlights the many gaps in viral hepatitis diagnosis and treatment throughout region. He notes that the progress being made to address these gaps has been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and highlighted the need for concentrated efforts to get progress back on track.

Professor Hamid describes need for increased public knowledge and understanding about the nature of hepatitis, and awareness that a hepatitis C cure is available, and very effective treatment to control hepatitis B virus. These interventions will importantly successfully reduce the development of cancer in people across the region.
