Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition where there is damage to the macula or central part of the retina, which can affect central vision.

As AMD can cause blindness if left untreated, proper diagnosis is key to effective treatment, so that disease progression can be slowed to retain vision.

She is also the lead author of the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS) Myopia Consensus Statements (2016, 2023, 2025).

Diabetes can have a huge impact on your eyes as the high blood sugar level causes damage to the retina, resulting in a condition known as diabetic retinopathy.

The high blood sugar level caused by diabetes can cause changes to the blood vessels, making them swell and leak fluid. It can also cause abnormal new blood vessels to grow on the retina.

While people with uncontrolled and prolonged diabetes are more likely to be affected by diabetic retinopathy, those with high blood pressure or a previous history of stroke or heart disease are at an increased risk as well.

Presbyopia is an age-related eye condition that results in blurred near vision as the eye’s lens loses its flexibility.

Apart from natural ageing, factors like a history of eye or head trauma, farsightedness, or diseases like diabetes and multiple sclerosis can cause those who are younger to develop presbyopia.

It’s common for people to dismiss changes in their vision, thinking it’s simply a part of ageing.

However, in reality, most eye diseases progress silently with no warning signs, and by the time symptoms appear, the damage may already be irreversible.
