Dear friends, we are very excited to share with you a special offering we have been working on: the first of Women on the Rises’ quarterly Immersive Experience!

✨ In this extension of Walk to Rise, we take you on a guided tour of the island and hold an art session in the wilderness with *UbinArtist, Terence Tan* and *Daylight Creative Therapies, Rachel Yang*.

✨ We will explore the themes of _bridging and belonging_. What does it mean for us city dwellers, to experience rural Singapore and take in the “kampung spirit”. What may we learn about belonging and connecting to ourselves and each other in community. What we can we take back about building a village for ourselves?

Materials/ tools/ art stuff! Call it what you like, but our favs are the simplest ones anyone can use. A pencil to make a mark, a pen for something a little more permanent, a piece of paper to fold, tear, cut, or colour on. Sometimes starting with art again as an adult can be daunting. Try beginning with a simple line drawing and taking it from there. Give yourself permission to make a mess and try to suspend judgement on your artwork. It’s the process that counts.

One way to develop a healthier relationship with your inner critic is to learn to embrace self-acceptance.
💙 Imperfections are a part of what makes us human. No one person is perfect. We each have flaws, fears, doubts, worries, things we don’t like about ourselves.

💙 Try to meet or attend to these parts with compassion. This may sound like, “it’s ok to make mistakes, what can I learn from them?” Or “im learning to care for my body rather than berate it”. Start with being gentle.

💙 The rewards for focusing on your own personal growth far outweigh the rush of dopamine we receive from external validation.

Remember, overcoming your inner critic takes time and patience. Be gentle with yourself throughout the process and celebrate small victories along the way.

Overcoming (or learning to work with) our inner critic

The process of overcoming our inner critic can be challenging, but possible. Try starting with:

💙 Recognising and acknowledging your inner critic. Learn to become aware of the negative and critical thoughts that arise within you.
By acknowledging the negative voice, you can start to distance yourself from its influence.

💙 Challenge the critical voice: Ask if these thoughts are true. Write down what you think and allow for some time to re-evaluate if these thoughts are true. Consider how you might attend to these feelings with more compassion.

💙 Reframe mistakes as opportunities to learn. Understand that everyone makes mistakes, and they do not define your worth or abilities. Setbacks can be opportunities for growth and improvement. Shifting our mindset is a key part of the journey in working with your critical voice.

💙 Practice, practice, practice! Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being by engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Surround yourself with people who champion you rather than bring you down.

💙 Practice self-acceptance by embracing your strengths, weaknesses, and imperfections. Remember, no one is perfect, and it’s okay to make mistakes.

Remember, overcoming your inner critic takes time and patience. Be gentle with yourself throughout the process and celebrate small victories along the way.

Where does our Inner Critic come from?

Our inner critic (that niggly voice telling us we can’t do things well, or that we should be better at something) tends to originate from different sources, mainly our childhood experiences (the way we were raised, societal, cultural & religious expectations) and personal beliefs that we’ve collected as we develop and grow.

Much of the information we have received from figures in authority (our elders, teachers, bosses) and the comparisons made between ourselves and others also shape our internal dialogue and contribute to the development of our inner critic.

In an ever developing society that often promotes ideals of perfection, success, and worthiness - we are often pitted against one another and this can lead to more self-judgment and comparison. This is also further compounded by the media, advertising, and societal norms which further reinforce these expectations on striving to be the best.

Can our inner critic be helpful? Definitely!

Check in tomorrow as we explore the up sides of our inner critic and how we can learn to find constructive balance in our inner worlds.
