NTU School of Biological Sciences Nanyang Technological University, Singapore - School of Biological Sciences The School of Biological Sciences was established in July 2001.

The field of life sciences has been widely acknowledged as the next major technological revolution after the Internet. New knowledge and discoveries generated as a result of genome and molecular biology research will have major impact on the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries, healthcare, food and nutrition, people and the environment. Singapore is already the regional medical and life sciences research centre. With our good base of life sciences players, highly skilled and educated workforce, excellent communication systems, good industry infrastructure and a stable government, Singapore has the potential and capability to become a major international medical and life sciences hub. At NTU, we have already made a start in building a capability in the life sciences through our collaboration with the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in the field of biomedical engineering. Besides the liberty to chart new developmental plans outside the organizational structure and constraints of traditional schools of biological sciences and medicine, NTU's technological focus will provide a good basis for developing new technologies and schools in life sciences.

How do nerve cells communicate, and what happens when that communication breaks down?

Nanyang Assistant Professor Sandip Basak and his research team have uncovered new insights into how ion channels open and close to regulate nerve signalling. Using advanced cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), the team captured fleeting molecular states in the bacterial ion channel GLIC, revealing how even symmetric channels can activate through asymmetric pathways โ€“ a key to understanding neurological disorders.

This study was made possible by the collaborative efforts of key members of Asst. Prof. Basakโ€™s lab: Mr. Li Zhuowen, Dr. Nikhil Bharambe, and Dr. Asha Manikkoth Balakrishna, who combined structural, computational, and electrophysiological expertise to illuminate these molecular mechanisms.

Biological Sciences undergraduate Francis Milo brought his passion for immunology beyond the classroom to The Granulocyte Meeting 2025 in Shanghai. โœˆ๏ธ

The conference deepened his understanding of granulocyte diversity and their roles in inflammation and cancer โ€“ insights that fuel his Final Year Project on neutrophils in cancer progression.

Beyond science, Francis also explored Shanghaiโ€™s dynamic food scene, discovering the city one meal at a time.

Peptide droplets reveal how cells organise molecules! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Researchers, with Jessica Lim as coโ€“first author and Assoc. Prof. Konstantin Pervushin and Prof. Ali Miserez as corresponding authors, built bioinspired peptide-based droplets that mimic how cells organise molecules without membranes.

Using advanced NMR, neutron scattering, and confocal microscopy, the team discovered how small peptide clusters form larger porous networks, acting like a molecular sieve for selective molecular capture. This work could guide the design of soft materials and sheds light on how lifeโ€™s earliest compartments may have worked.
