Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a non-surgical vision correction option that uses specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea. This allows you to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without relying on glasses or contact lenses.

It is widely used for myopia and is an increasingly popular option in myopia management for children in Singapore.

With proper assessment, personalised fitting, and consistent care, Ortho-K can offer both visual freedom and added confidence in daily life.

If you are exploring options for yourself or your child, a comprehensive eye examination is a great first step!

Buying lenses online can be convenient, but your eye health comes first. Always have a recent eye exam and use a valid prescription from a licensed optometrist. Check lens type, base curve, diameter, and brand carefully as even small differences can affect comfort and vision. Avoid switching brands without professional advice, and only purchase from trusted, regulated retailers to reduce the risk of counterfeit products. If you experience dryness, redness, or blurred vision, stop wearing the lenses and consult your eye care provider.

You are probably wearing contact lenses wrong 👁️

Contact lenses are not just for convenience or aesthetics. They are medical devices that sit directly on your eyes, which means proper fitting, hygiene and usage are essential for safe wear.

Wearing the wrong lens type, overwearing your lenses or poor cleaning habits can lead to dry eyes, irritation and even serious eye infections that may affect your vision long term.

In Singapore, long screen time and air conditioned environments can make contact lens discomfort worse, increasing the risk of dryness and eye strain.

A proper contact lens fitting by an optometrist ensures the right lens for your eyes and lifestyle, helping you see clearly while protecting your eye health.

If you experience redness, discomfort or blurry vision, do not ignore it. Get your eyes checked and make sure you are wearing your lenses safely. Protect your vision and wear your contact lenses the right way 👀✨

Most children won’t say their vision is blurry because they assume what they see is normal.

Undetected vision problems like myopia, astigmatism, and lazy eye (amblyopia) can affect reading, learning, and attention. Many children compensate with one stronger eye, so the problem can go unnoticed without a proper eye exam.

A comprehensive children’s eye exam helps detect issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Did you know that your child’s surroundings — like time spent indoors or the amount of natural light — can influence how their eyes develop?

In our latest article, “Watch Your Windows: Environmental Factors in Urban Childhood Myopia (Part 1),” we explore how city living and lifestyle habits might impact the growing rates of nearsightedness in children.

🚨 6 sneaky ways we’re lowkey sabotaging our poor eyeballs 👁️💀

1️⃣ Reading super near with that legendary slouch while lying down 🤦🏻‍♀️
2️⃣ Letting your bangs cosplay as an eye patch 💇🏻‍♀️
3️⃣ Staring at the computer for 20 mins straight like it owes you money 💻
4️⃣ Reading in a moving vehicle = rollercoaster for your eyeballs 🎢📖
5️⃣ Forcing your eyes to decode fonts smaller than your GPA 📚
6️⃣ Reading under sunlight blasting in your face like you’re in a K-drama spotlight 🌞🎬

Have you heard of Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS)?

This is a condition that affects the brain and eyes (the retina is part of your brain) when astronauts spend 6 months or more in space. Astronauts experience changes to their optic nerve, retina, and visual acuity amongst other things.

Imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) used in optometry have been used to study SANS.

In contrast to delicate human tissue, creatures like the tardigrade are fairly resilient to space travel. A 2024 study (Szydlowski et al.) even found that bacterial stowaways ‘exposed to space conditions demonstrate enhanced antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity’, becoming novel species highly adapted to the spacecraft environment.
For most of us, space tourism wasn’t on the agenda this summer but perhaps that will change over the next decade.

In the meantime, to keep your land-based eyes healthy, be sure to keep to the recommended schedule for eye check-ups. On your next visit, you can help us draw or colour in an astronaut!
