Orthomed Physio specialises in complex ACL revision surgery. Congratulations JJ who has just completed 5 revision ACL surgeries and rehab, and he’ll be discharged today. Orthomed Physio has been involved in every step of the process in choosing the right surgical group, advising him in regards to rehab rehabilitation, and the results speak for themselves.

There is a link between the use of Ciprofloxacin antibiotic and Achilles tendon pain. We know that some antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin which is part of the fluoroquinolone group can have an effect on tendons, producing a tendinopathy.

If you use one of these antibiotics and it results in bilateral Achilles pain or patella tendon pain or tennis elbow pain affecting the tendons, you’d be well advised to speak to your GP or doctor about looking for an alternative medication.

It’s not uncommon that patients will consult me with tendon pain and we make the link with these antibiotics.

If you damage your articular cartilage, which is the structure that covers bones in a joint, would you believe if you’re under the age of 20 there is a capacity for that articular cartilage to fully regenerate back to normal…

Who would’ve thought this was the case! There is little data that is available on this, however, when speaking to experienced orthopaedic surgeons with high volume, when they re-operate on patients that have had damage to the articular cartilage below the age of 20, some 20 years later, they see complete healing.

An important fact that should be considered when treating adolescents or younger adults who have early age articular cartilage damage.

When looking at the size of an anterior cruciate ligament graft, by increasing the diameter by 1 mm from let’s say 7 mm to 8 mm, we increase the cross-sectionsl area by more than 30%.

If we increase the graft size from 8 mm to 10 mm, we get a 60% increase in cross-sectional area… Crazy numbers….

We would assume also if there’s a 30% increase in cross-sectional area or even a 60% increase this could equate to both 30% and 60% increases in strength of the new graft.

Size does matter!

Removal of the meniscus in under 20 year olds has the capacity to grow back normally. There is a misconception that once the meniscus is removed in the younger patient that it will not grow back…. This is false. This is worth considering when managing younger patients with meniscus tears

Hand Collateral Ligament Injuries: Small Ligaments, Big Consequences

Collateral ligaments provide lateral stability to finger joints, particularly the PIP and MCP. Injuries often occur from lateral impact during ball sports or falls. While minor sprains can recover with buddy taping and early mobilization, complete ruptures or injuries with joint instability often require surgical repair. Early referral to a hand specialist is essential in these cases. Missed or poorly managed tears can result in chronic instability, impaired grip strength, and long-term joint dysfunction.
