Garuda Purana
This is the main scripture describing the journey of the soul after death and what happens when the rituals are properly performed.

It says that when the antyeṣṭi (final rites) and śrāddha (offerings) are done correctly and with faith, the soul is purified of attachments and is escorted by Yamadūtas or divine messengers.

These messengers appear in different forms depending on the person’s karma:

For a righteous person, beautiful divine messengers on golden or radiant vehicles (vimānas) come.

For one with negative karma, fearsome messengers come.
