Is cancer something you’re born with, or something that develops over time?

In The Straits Times, Dr Wong Seng Weng, Medical Director at The Cancer Centre, shares that cancer is largely an acquired condition, shaped by genetic changes that build up over the years. While some people may inherit a higher risk, most cancers develop due to ageing, environmental exposure, and lifestyle factors.

This is why prevention, regular screening, and early detection still matter.

📌 Why do advanced cancers lead to organ failure?
It’s not always the cancer itself that causes death. In many cases, it’s the way cancer cells spread. These cells move from the original site to vital organs like the liver, lungs, bones and brain. As they invade, they gradually damage and shut down organ function.

Over time, some cancer cells become resistant to treatment. They keep growing and destroying healthy tissue, making therapies less effective. This ultimately results in complete organ failure, which is often the true cause of death in advanced-stage cases.

🧠 Understanding this process helps guide earlier diagnosis and better care.
