Exercises for Structural Scoliosis:
The Schroth Method: An Evidence-Based Approach to Scoliosis

Schroth Method is an evidence-based exercise program for managing scoliosis. It's not just general exercise; it's a specific approach tailored to your unique spinal curve.

This method helps you:

👉Keep good body alignment.
👉Open up the concave (collapsed) areas of your torso.
👉Stay tall and lengthen your spine.
👉Derotate the "hump" to improve your posture.

By focusing on these core principles, Schroth exercises can help you reduce pain, improve your posture, and potentially stabilize or reduce the progression of your curve.

Why Choose an Evidence-Based Approach?
We believe in using treatments that are backed by science. The Schroth method is one of the most studied Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises (PSSE) and is recognized globally for its effectiveness.

Pilates can be a wonderful way to build strength and flexibility, but if you have scoliosis, it's essential to approach it with care!

Exercises Not Recommended for Structural Scoliosis- Specific Yoga Poses

Do you have scoliosis and love yoga? 🧘‍♀️

It's crucial to be mindful of your spine and avoid extreme forward and backward bending during your practice. Without careful attention, this can create harmful stress and imbalance.

If you are unsure whether your scoliosis is structural, or if the poses you love are safe for your spine, we can help.

Contact us at BREMJ Scoliosis Treatment & Physio. We can review your current poses, suggest modifications, and give you expert advice on managing your condition safely. Your spine's health is our top priority! ✨

Exercises Not Recommended for Structural Scoliosis

Hey scoliosis community! When you have structural scoliosis, exercises need to be chosen carefully. This condition isn't just a simple curve—it's 3D, involving bending and rotation.

Many people think side bending or twisting to one side is a good idea, but this can actually compromise other curves in your body. These are often "uniplanar" exercises, meaning they only work in one direction and can create more imbalance.

Effective scoliosis exercises should target all three planes of movement: front, side, and rotational. That’s why programs like Schroth exercises and other PSSE (Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises) are so important. They are designed to be specific to your unique curve pattern.

Want to learn more? Check out our scoliosis exercise program, which customizes exercises for individual curves based on Schroth principles and other PSSE.

Backpack Weight: What You Need to Know

Did you know your backpack shouldn't weigh more than 10% of your body weight? This is especially crucial for students, as a heavy load can cause back pain and strain on the spine, which is a major concern for the scoliosis community.

To help your back, here are some practical tips for students to lighten their load and carry it correctly:

👉Remove the excess: Get into the habit of cleaning out your backpack daily. Remove any books, papers, or items you don't need for the day.

👉Choose the right backpack: Invest in a backpack with ergonomic features like wide, padded straps and a waist belt. This helps distribute the weight evenly across your body.

👉Distribute the weight: Carry heavier items, like water bottles, in your hands or a separate bag to avoid placing all the load on your back.

👉Mind your posture! This is the most important tip. Be mindful of how you stand and walk with your backpack on. Avoid shifting your weight into a scoliotic posture. An asymmetric load on your spine can contribute to curve progression.

Remember, a lighter load and good posture can make a big difference. But if you're struggling with scoliosis-related back pain, professional guidance is key.

Many people experience chronic lower back and neck discomfort without realizing the root cause is often their sitting posture. A misalignment in your sagittal profile, particularly the loss of your natural lumbar lordosis, can place significant stress on your spine.

Ignoring these early symptoms can lead to more severe, long-term issues. Don't let poor posture compromise your quality of life.

Our expert team at BREMJ Scoliosis Treatment & Physio specializes in assessing and correcting postural imbalances. We provide targeted physiotherapy to help you manage your symptoms and restore a healthy spinal alignment.

Take a proactive step towards better spinal health. Contact us - BREMJ Scoliosis Treatment & Physio today for a professional consultation and personalized treatment plan.
