Hip pain is often brushed off as part of ageing: something to live with, rather than something to look into. But when simple movements like walking, climbing stairs or getting out of a chair start to feel harder, it may be a sign that the joint is more seriously affected than it seems.

In this article, Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon Dr Hitendra K Doshi explains when hip replacement may be considered - from fractures after a fall to long-standing conditions like osteoarthritis - and what recovery involves. With the right treatment and support, many patients are able to regain strength and confidence, and even walk independently again in a few weeks.

If hip discomfort has been limiting your daily activities, do not hesitate to get it assessed. Share this with someone who might need to hear it, and read the full article at 🔗 https://mtalvernia.sg/news/ask-the-experts-hip-trouble-in-the-elderly/ to learn more.

Live Replay 📹 “Is it safe for children to use UV protection?”

Many parents wonder if sunscreen is safe for young children, or worry that avoiding the sun might affect their vitamin D levels.

As Dr Shanna shares, sun protection can be safely used for children based on the instructions detailed on the product labels. However, beyond sunscreen, simple habits like avoiding peak sun hours and planning outdoor activities earlier in the day can go a long way in protecting your child’s skin. For vitamin D, just a short period of sun exposure each day is often sufficient. ☀️

If you are unsure how to balance sun safety and your child’s health, it may be helpful to speak with a doctor for personalised guidance.

Live Replay 📹 “Will my child outgrow eczema?”

It is one of the most common questions parents ask when eczema first appears: Is this something temporary, or something we have to manage for years to come?

While eczema can look concerning in the early stages, especially in babies and young children, the longer-term outlook may be more reassuring than expected. As Dr Shanna shares, when eczema begins early in life, many children do see improvement as they grow older. If you are navigating eczema with your child and unsure what to expect, it can be helpful to speak with a dermatologist to have a clearer understanding of how it may evolve over time.

Live Replay 🎥 “When should you take probiotics, and how do they actually work?”

Probiotics are often seen as a simple add-on to improve gut health, but there's much more to them. In our last Alvernia Live Chat, gastroenterologist Dr Bhavesh Kishor Doshi shares his personal tips on how to take probiotic supplements to reduce side effects, and the interesting role they play in our body beyond gut health.

If you have been considering probiotics or are unsure if they are suitable for you, it may be helpful to discuss this with your doctor. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital for more Alvernia Live Chat replays, and leave a comment with topics you would like our doctors to cover next 💬

Live Replay 🎥 “Is constant snacking better than eating one large meal for reflux?”

In our last Alvernia Live Chat, gastroenterologist Dr Bhavesh Kishor Doshi shares that while large meals can worsen indigestion, bloating and reflux symptoms, constant grazing may not necessarily be the solution either. The key lies in balance: opting for smaller, regular meals and choosing snacks that are nourishing, rather than highly processed or trigger foods.

If you have been adjusting your eating habits but still experience persistent reflux or discomfort, it may be helpful to seek a proper evaluation. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital for more Alvernia Live Chat replays, and leave a comment with topics you would like our doctors to cover next 💬

In pregnancy, it can be difficult to tell the difference between everyday discomfort and warning signs. Symptoms like pelvic pressure, backache, spotting or changes in discharge are often brushed aside, but when they become regular, persistent or more intense, they may signal preterm labour.

In this article, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Dr Serena Koh Meiling shares how to recognise early symptoms, at-risk groups, and how early support can help protect both mother and baby.

If something does not feel quite right, it is always worth getting it checked. Tag someone who may find this helpful, and read the full article via 🔗 https://mtalvernia.sg/news/ask-the-experts-signs-youre-in-early-labour/ to learn more.

😮‍💨 Waking up in the middle of the night, gasping for air, can feel frightening. Many people brush it off as stress, or poor sleep But when shortness of breath starts becoming more frequent, or comes with swelling in the legs and ankles, it may be a sign that the heart is struggling to pump effectively.

In our Ask the Experts feature, interventional cardiologist Dr Tan Svenszeat (Orchard Heart Specialist) explains how heart failure develops, symptoms to watch for, and how cardiologists diagnose and manage the condition effectively.

If you or someone you love has noticed worsening shortness of breath, especially at night, it may be worth looking deeper. Baby Tyler arrived in the early hours of 4 March, coinciding with the 65th Anniversary of Mount Alvernia Hospital. A truly special day that marks a milestone for us as well as a new beginning for a growing family.

Parents Daryl and Jamie, who met through mutual friends at a gathering, are already proud parents to little Louise. Three years ago, big sister Louise was born here too. In a beautiful full-circle moment, Louise was welcomed in our main building, while baby Tyler was born at the St Anne Mother & Child Centre. This reflects how we continue to grow alongside the families we serve with love.

Arriving ahead of his 8 March due date after 15 hours of labour, baby Tyler’s birth was filled with excitement and anticipation. Daddy Daryl and Mummy Jamie shared that they were both excited and a little anxious about how Louise would respond to her baby brother. Their worries quickly melted away when proud big sister Louise arrived bearing gifts, joyfully watching over him with curiosity and love.

For their second child, the couple knew exactly where they wanted to deliver, choosing us once again for the warmth, reassurance and dedicated care of our team at Mount Alvernia Hospital. The couple shared that it felt like a true blessing, a beautiful reminder of our commitment to care for every generation with compassion.

Our Chief Executive Officer, Dr James Lam presented the first three families with anniversary gifts and shared, “As we celebrate 65 years of caring, baby Tyler’s arrival is a precious reminder of the generations we are privileged to journey with for many more years to come.”

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for their lovely gifts, which made this moment even more special.
