Mount Alvernia Hospital

Mount Alvernia Hospital Our mission can be summed up in: โ€˜Serve all with Love'

Founded on Catholic values by the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood on 4 March 1961, Mount Alvernia Hospital is the only not-for-profit general acute tertiary care private hospital in Singapore. With close to 380 beds, we are supported by more than 300 on-campus specialist doctors and nearly 1,400 accredited doctors. Dedicated Clinical Pastoral Care forms part of our holistic care for patients and their families regardless of backgrounds and beliefs. As a not-for-profit hospital, Mount Alvernia Hospital channels its surpluses towards improving hospital facilities, supporting the Assisi Hospice, and giving back to the underserved community through our outreach programmes, all guided by its motto to Serve all with Love.

๐Ÿคฑ Breastfeeding may not feel intuitive at first. Many new mothers worry if their baby is latching well, or wonder if breastfeeding discomfort is something they simply have to endure.

In our upcoming prenatal seminar, our Lactation Consultant Ms Rita Francis will guide parents through the fundamentals of breastfeeding - because small details like an optimal latch can make the difference between a stressful feed and a comfortable, sustainable experience. With the right support early on, many common breastfeeding challenges can be managed with ease.

Live Replay ๐ŸŽฅ โ€œWhen should you stop monitoring and see a doctor?โ€

It can be tempting to keep monitoring your blood pressure or blood sugar at home, hoping the numbers will gradually return to normal.

As Cardiologist Dr Soon Chao Yang explains, persistently elevated readings over two to three months should not be ignored. Ongoing borderline or high levels may signal an underlying condition that benefits from early medical attention, and timely treatment can reduce the risk of long-term complications and support better control in the years ahead.

If your readings have not improved after a few months, it may be time to check in with your doctor for a proper evaluation. Are you due for a review?

Live Replay ๐Ÿ“ท โ€œWhat numbers should we remember for blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar?โ€

120, 80, 140, 90, 3.6, 1.4, 6, 7 - what do all these numbers actually tell you about your health?
We often hear them during health screenings, but understanding what they mean in context is just as important as remembering them.

In this highlight from our last Alvernia Live Chat, Cardiologist Dr Soon Chao Yang explains the general numbers to look out for when it comes to blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, and how these numbers may differ depending on various factors, from your age, to medical history and overall cardiovascular risk.

If you are unsure how to interpret your results, speak to your doctor for personalised advice. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for more Alvernia Live Chat replays, and leave a comment to suggest what you would like our doctors to cover next ๐Ÿ“ท

Priscilla and Benedict, both 30, welcomed their baby girl, Olivia, in the Year of the Horse, a joyful addition to their growing family. The couple, who have known each other for 12 years, got married in 2022 and welcomed their first child, son Thaddeus, in 2024. He was also born here on Good Friday, making both their childrenโ€™s birthdays extra meaningful.

Baby Olivia was expected on 23 February, but Mummy Priscilla began experiencing contractions from Sunday. On Monday evening, the couple still made it to their reunion dinner before heading home to rest. At around 3am, their son suddenly woke up crying, almost like a signal that his baby sister was on her way. Soon after, the couple headed to the hospital, and by about 5.30am, they were holding Baby Olivia in their arms.

The proud parents are overjoyed and looking forward to introducing Baby Olivia to her older brother, Thaddeus, and watching the two grow up together. They plan to spend their Chinese New Year days at home, enjoying precious time caring for their newborn and building memories as a family.

Mummy Priscilla and Daddy Benedict shared that welcoming a baby in the Year of the Horse feels especially happy for the family. They hope Baby Olivia will grow up strong, graceful and free-spirited, just like the qualities the horse is known for.

Gifts were presented to the first 3 babies born in the year of the horse including a $188 angbao from the hospital for the first baby. A huge thank you to our sponsors for their thoughtful gifts that made this moment even more memorable.

A throat that constantly feels irritated, dry, or uncomfortable is easy to brush off, until it starts affecting your sleep, focus, or daily comfort. When these symptoms linger or keep returning, they may signal an underlying issue rather than a passing irritation ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Dr Leslie Koh, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon, helps to explain what persistent throat symptoms can mean, the triggers behind them, and how medical assessment and treatment can address the discomfort and prevent flare-ups.

It was a joy meeting so many parents and parents-to-be in the last Mummys Market ๐Ÿฉท Our Mount Alvernia Hospital team spent the event weekend having meaningful conversations around pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood, while offering a closer look at the support we provide before and after delivery.

Our Parentcraft counsellors also shared practical insights on newborn care and early parenting through hands-on sharing sessions, and our team was on hand to answer questions about maternity services and delivery options. We would also like to thank our Alvernia Ladies Card partner Beauty Mums & Babies Wellness, for a thoughtful touch to the experience at our booth.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, or simply spend a moment with us ๐Ÿฅฐ The conversations may have started at Mummys Market, but the journey does not end there. ๐Ÿฆต Aching legs, visible veins, or swelling after a long day on your feet? These symptoms are more common than you may realise, and they are not always โ€œjust cosmeticโ€. Varicose veins can reflect underlying circulation issues, especially for those who stand for prolonged periods or have a family history of vein problems.

Senior Consultant Vascular Surgeon Dr Desmond Ooi shares the top three misconceptions he often hears in his clinic, and how recognising the signs of varicose veins early can support better long-term vein health.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on for our last prenatal seminar, Journey to Parenthood: High-risk Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Caring for Your Child ๐Ÿค

It was a meaningful afternoon of shared learning and thoughtful conversations, as our speakers addressed the real questions and concerns many parents face during pregnancy and early parenthood. Ms Richelle Zelie Tang, Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) from our Alvernia Parentcraft Centre, walked parents through breastfeeding basics with practical tips and tricks ๐Ÿผ, while Dr Darryl Lim, Paediatrician from Kinder Clinic, spoke about recognising and caring for common illnesses among young children ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป.

From preparing for complex pregnancies to caring for little ones with confidence, the session was centred on supporting families with practical knowledge, empathy, and care ๐Ÿ’—

Behind every meaningful patient experience is a healthcare professional who chooses care, patience and responsibility.

This year, we are humbled to have 47 of our Mount Alvernia Hospital colleagues recognised at the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards 2026. Their work often happens quietly, but the impact is felt deeply by the patients and families they serve. At Mount Alvernia Hospital, Serve All with Love is lived out through these acts of care.
