In pregnancy, it can be difficult to tell the difference between everyday discomfort and warning signs. Symptoms like pelvic pressure, backache, spotting or changes in discharge are often brushed aside, but when they become regular, persistent or more intense, they may signal preterm labour.

In this article, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Dr Serena Koh Meiling shares how to recognise early symptoms, at-risk groups, and how early support can help protect both mother and baby.

If something does not feel quite right, it is always worth getting it checked. Tag someone who may find this helpful, and read the full article via ๐Ÿ”— https://mtalvernia.sg/news/ask-the-experts-signs-youre-in-early-labour/ to learn more.

Baby Tyler arrived in the early hours of 4 March, coinciding with the 65th Anniversary of Mount Alvernia Hospital. A truly special day that marks a milestone for us as well as a new beginning for a growing family.

Parents Daryl and Jamie, who met through mutual friends at a gathering, are already proud parents to little Louise. Three years ago, big sister Louise was born here too. In a beautiful full-circle moment, Louise was welcomed in our main building, while baby Tyler was born at the St Anne Mother & Child Centre. This reflects how we continue to grow alongside the families we serve with love.

Arriving ahead of his 8 March due date after 15 hours of labour, baby Tylerโ€™s birth was filled with excitement and anticipation. Daddy Daryl and Mummy Jamie shared that they were both excited and a little anxious about how Louise would respond to her baby brother. Their worries quickly melted away when proud big sister Louise arrived bearing gifts, joyfully watching over him with curiosity and love.

For their second child, the couple knew exactly where they wanted to deliver, choosing us once again for the warmth, reassurance and dedicated care of our team at Mount Alvernia Hospital. The couple shared that it felt like a true blessing, a beautiful reminder of our commitment to care for every generation with compassion.

Our Chief Executive Officer, Dr James Lam presented the first three families with anniversary gifts and shared, โ€œAs we celebrate 65 years of caring, baby Tylerโ€™s arrival is a precious reminder of the generations we are privileged to journey with for many more years to come.โ€

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for their lovely gifts, which made this moment even more special.

๐Ÿคฑ Breastfeeding may not feel intuitive at first. Many new mothers worry if their baby is latching well, or wonder if breastfeeding discomfort is something they simply have to endure.

Live Replay ๐ŸŽฅ โ€œWhen should you stop monitoring and see a doctor?โ€

It can be tempting to keep monitoring your blood pressure or blood sugar at home, hoping the numbers will gradually return to normal.

As Cardiologist Dr Soon Chao Yang explains, persistently elevated readings over two to three months should not be ignored. Ongoing borderline or high levels may signal an underlying condition that benefits from early medical attention, and timely treatment can reduce the risk of long-term complications and support better control in the years ahead.

If your readings have not improved after a few months, it may be time to check in with your doctor for a proper evaluation. Are you due for a review?

Live Replay ๐Ÿ“ท โ€œWhat numbers should we remember for blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar?โ€

120, 80, 140, 90, 3.6, 1.4, 6, 7 - what do all these numbers actually tell you about your health?
We often hear them during health screenings, but understanding what they mean in context is just as important as remembering them.

In this highlight from our last Alvernia Live Chat, Cardiologist Dr Soon Chao Yang explains the general numbers to look out for when it comes to blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, and how these numbers may differ depending on various factors, from your age, to medical history and overall cardiovascular risk.

If you are unsure how to interpret your results, speak to your doctor for personalised advice. Follow Mount Alvernia Hospital on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for more Alvernia Live Chat replays, and leave a comment to suggest what you would like our doctors to cover next ๐Ÿ“ท
