Last week, we talked about moments when correcting a child’s speech can interrupt communication.

That doesn’t mean errors don’t matter.

This week’s focus: what to do instead.

As speech therapists, we support learning by:
* providing accurate language models
* responding to the child’s message
* keeping the interaction natural and positive

Example:
Child: “I goed park.”
Adult: “You went to the park.”

Same message. Correct model. No pressure to repeat.

This approach supports language growth without shutting down communication 🌱

It’s natural to want to help your child “say it properly.”
But constant correction can make children hesitant to talk.

✨ Instead of correcting, try modelling:
Child: “Dog runned fast!”
Adult: “Yes! The dog ran fast!”

This keeps communication positive, safe, and flowing — which is where real language growth happens.

Kids don’t need the answer — they need a partner.

This phrase tells them:

💪 You’re capable
🤝 You’re not alone
🧠 We problem-solve as a team

It builds resilience, confidence, and a love of learning—even when something feels hard.

We often hear about red flags, but let’s talk about the green flags — the small, wonderful signs that your child is building skills in their own way, at their own pace. 💚

Here are some green flags in early development to celebrate:

🌿 They show joy in play — giggles, eye contact, engagement.
🌿 They show preferences — favourite toys, songs, people, activities.
🌿 They attempt to copy actions — clapping, waving, making silly sounds.
🌿 Your child shows interest in people — smiling, watching faces, seeking connection.
🌿 They make sounds or gestures to communicate — pointing, babbling, reaching.
🌿 They explore their environment — touching, crawling, climbing, testing ideas.

These small moments tell us:
✨ Your child is curious.
✨ Your child is learning.
✨ Your child is connecting.

Every green flag is worth noticing, celebrating, and cherishing. 💛

If you’ve been worried or unsure about your child’s development—remember, you’re not alone. Therapists are here to support both you and your child.

Fine motor skills aren’t just about writing or using scissors ✏️—they start with play!

Encourage small hands to explore, squeeze, pinch, and build—it all adds up to stronger hands ready for school tasks later on. 💪

👉 Copying sounds helps kids:

🧠 Learn turn-taking – the back-and-forth of communication.
💬 Build sound awareness – understanding how sounds feel in the mouth.
👂 Strengthen listening skills – noticing differences between sounds.
🌱 Practice speech muscles – preparing for real words.

💡 Tips for parents:

Make silly sounds during play (“mmm!”, “ah!”, “ba-ba!”).
Wait for your child to try copying—even if it’s not perfect.
Celebrate every attempt with smiles, claps, or praise! 🎉

Before children say words, they learn to copy sounds—and this is a BIG milestone in speech and language development!

✨ Remember: copying sounds is the bridge between babbling and talking. Encouraging it makes language learning fun and playful.

When kids share—even in small ways—they’re testing: “Is it safe to talk to you?”

How you respond can either open the door wider… or close it. 🚪

Try these simple listening phrases:
👂 “Tell me more.”
👂 “I hear you.”
👂 “That sounds really important to you.”
👂 “I want to understand.”

✨ These affirmations let children know their voice matters and that you’re truly present. Over time, this builds trust, connection, and emotional safety.

It’s tempting to ask kids constant questions—“What’s that? What color is it? What’s he doing?”—but too many questions can feel like a test. 😅

Here’s how to keep conversations flowing without turning it into an interrogation:

1️⃣ Comment Instead of Questioning
Instead of: “What’s that?”
Try: “That’s a big red truck!”

2️⃣ Use Self-Talk
Narrate what you’re doing: “I’m stirring the soup. It smells yummy!”

3️⃣ Use Parallel Talk
Narrate what they’re doing: “You’re building a tall tower!”

💡 These strategies take the pressure off, model rich language, and give children the words they need—without quizzing them.

✨ Try it today and watch the difference!

💬 Words matter—and what we say to kids shapes how they see themselves. Instead of generic praise like “Good job,” try using specific, effort-focused phrases that build confidence and resilience.

Here are some of our favorites:
✅ “You figured it out!”
✅ “I love how you kept trying.”
✅ “You were so focused just now!”
✅ “That was a kind thing to do.”
✅ “You stayed calm even when it was hard.”

These phrases highlight your child’s effort, choices, and strengths, helping them feel seen and valued for who they are, not just what they achieve.

Teaching kids about body ownership starts early—and it’s a powerful foundation for confidence, safety, and self-respect. 💪🏽

Here’s what we teach in our sessions (and what you can reinforce at home):
🧠 ”I can say no to hugs or touches I don’t want.”
🧠 ”I get to choose who helps me with my body.”
🧠 ”All bodies are good bodies.”
🧠 ”It’s OK to speak up when something feels wrong.”

💬 These simple, repeated messages help children understand consent, feel safe, and build a positive relationship with their bodies.

At Therapy Inc., we believe therapy should empower children—not just support their development. 💛

Behind every game, tea party, or superhero rescue is something powerful: emotional expression, creativity, problem-solving, and connection.

🌈 In play therapy, we follow the child’s lead to support their thoughts, feelings, and growth—without pressure.

What looks like simple fun is actually PACKED with opportunities for language growth!
Here’s what’s happening when kids play in the sand:

🗣️ New Vocabulary – Words like scoop, pour, wet, dry, smooth, bucket, shell come alive in context.

👂 Listening & Following Directions – “Put the shell on top! Fill the bucket halfway!”

🤝 Social Language – Turn-taking, negotiating roles, and using polite requests (“Can I use that next?”)

💭 Describing & Storytelling – “This is a sandcastle for a crab!” 🦀

🏖️ Beach play isn’t just sensory fun. It’s a language-rich adventure! So next time you’re seaside, chat, describe, and play along.
