Games can be sneaky. 🤭 They teach our Imagine If kids how to lose with grace, how to win with humility, and how to work with people who think differently.

All while everyone’s having a good time.

Games create low-stakes spaces where children get to practise being with others while winning, losing, and trying again together… which is often the most valuable and needed learning of all in that moment. 🎲

When young people have spent years managing their time, pursuing their interests, navigating real-world responsibilities, and making decisions about their learning, independence isn’t something they’re suddenly expected to develop — it’s already familiar territory.

And what if we told you that independence doesn’t suddenly appear at a certain age, anyway? It grows through the experience of planning, making mistakes, and trying again.

So, for many homeschooled teens, this process starts early, not late. 💡

Artistry isn’t only about art. It’s about imagination, problem-solving, risk-taking, and trusting your own ideas. Children are born fluent in this language, but it needs space to survive.

Simply put: when learning environments value outcomes over process, that part of children slowly fades and quiets. But when there’s room to experiment, it stays.

So when children are given space to try, fail, and try again, they don’t stop being artists. They do, however, grow into adults who can still imagine. 🎨

“Part of our discomfort with joy in education is cultural. Many of us were raised to believe that worthwhile things are supposed to feel difficult. That effort must look a certain way to count. If a child is enjoying themselves too much, something must be missing, such as rigour, discipline, and seriousness.

So we compromise. We tolerate joy in small doses, but we don’t design for it. We treat it as incidental, rather than intentional.

The irony is that this approach often produces the opposite of what we want. Children don’t become more motivated. They become compliant or burnt out — sometimes both.”
