𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞 🧐 - 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! 👩🏻‍⚕️

Let’s break down some common speech therapy myths vs truths mentioned in the video 👇

𝟏. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬.
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞! Speech therapy supports children, teens, adults, and older adults with speech, language, voice, swallowing, and communication - especially after illness or injury.

𝟐. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤.
𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞! Speech therapists work with a wide range of individuals, helping with swallowing, communication, cognition, and voice changes.

𝟑. 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫.
𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞! For individuals with swallowing difficulties, straws can increase choking risk because it’s harder to control the amount of liquid entering the mouth.

𝟒. 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞.
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞! Whispering can actually strain the voice box more than speaking in a normal, relaxed voice.

𝟓. 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.
𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞! Gestures, pictures, and communication devices support communication and may even help speech development.

𝟔. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞.
𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞! Speech therapy isn’t a quick fix. Progress is often gradual and depends on factors like the individual’s condition and commitment to therapy.

Hope you enjoyed the video and gained a better understanding of how speech therapy supports communication and swallowing 💬✨

Eating right for prostate health 🥦🍅🐟

Dr Thomas Chan, Consultant, Department of Urology at SKH, shares why a balanced diet plays a key role. Think more plant-based foods, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, tomatoes rich in lycopene, Omega-3 fish and soy products. At the same time, go easy on red meat, processed foods and high-fat dairy. 🍽️

Green tea, proper hydration, regular exercise and good sleep habits all help too. Most importantly, if you notice urinary symptoms, don’t wait. Get them checked early. ⚠️

❤️ Sometimes, kindness isn't about knowing the way - it's about walking it together.

Festive, Thoughtful, Sustainable February reminds us that the most meaningful gifts we can give are acts of compassion. At SKH, we witness quiet moments like these every day. Ms Gormit Kaur D/O Bachan Singh, Deputy Director, Nursing, shared an encounter that stayed with her deeply.

“Walking back from the auditorium, I saw him—an elderly man gently pushing his wife in a wheelchair, scanning the area with quiet determination mixed with confusion. When I asked if he needed help finding Lobby C, Rehabilitation Centre, the relief that washed over his face said everything.

I could have simply pointed the direction. Instead, I said, ‘I'll walk with you.’

As we walked together, I watched his careful, laboured steps. When I offered to help with the wheelchair, his grateful nod spoke volumes—too exhausted for words but overflowing with appreciation.

It brought back memories of me pushing my late mother's wheelchair, remembering how even flat ground could steal your breath, how love carries exhaustion in silence.

At the Rehabilitation Centre, his repeated thanks lingered long after we parted. Before leaving, I shared a shorter route for their next visit, hoping to make tomorrow's journey just a little easier.”

✨ Care isn't always found in grand gestures. Sometimes it's choosing to pause when the world rushes by. Sometimes it's walking alongside someone when they're struggling to find their way.

To every caregiver reading this: your love doesn't go unnoticed. Your strength inspires us all.

Can you fast safely during Ramadan while managing your medications?

With the right guidance, many patients can. Muhammad Farhan Bin Abdul Kareem, Pharmacist at SKH, shares why adjusting medication schedules to non-fasting hours is key to keeping treatment safe and effective. He encourages patients to check in with their healthcare team before making any changes, especially if their medication is taken more than three times a day.

Many patients, including those with diabetes and chronic conditions, can fast safely with proper guidance. Small but important steps, like timing medications carefully, monitoring symptoms, choosing suitable foods for sahur and iftar, and seeking advice early, can help make Ramadan a safer and more meaningful experience. ❤️
