Connect and Communicate

Connect and Communicate Centre for Speech Therapy and Social Communication We are a centre dedicated to supporting individuals to become effective ‘social communicators’.

Our effectiveness as communicators does not depend merely on the acquisition of speech and language. Many individuals are able to talk but not able to relate. Relating requires one to ‘tune in’ to another. It requires self awareness and awareness of others. Hence social communication includes:

-Attending to other people
-Sustaining engagement
-Thinking about others thinking about you
-Relating (through play and conversation)
-Problem solving and adapting one’s ideas
-Elaborating on shared ideas
-Reflective thinking

Why do we need individual therapy when we are learning to be social?

Think about social learning like a tree 🌳. Michelle and Pam from Social Thinking have come up with a visual for us to understand the foundations and capacities from which social learning grows. Every child is different and benefits from different formats of therapy. Feel free to reach out to your therapist to talk about what best suits you and your child! ❤️

We are sometimes surprised when our children are not aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and respond to them with confusion and sometimes anger. Here are some tools we use to discuss this with our kids (and even amongst ourselves) to help them feel on-board with their goals, and to help them learn about themselves, and eventually advocate for the support they need!

This Children’s Day, let’s celebrate the power of play 🛝. When we build on children’s natural curiosity🤔— their drive to explore, experiment, and connect — play becomes a powerful way to learn 🧠. Our children aren’t just having fun, they’re learning through play! Play is how development unfolds ✨

It can be frustrating when we have taught something, yet our learners are struggling to use or do them independently. We love how this framework makes it explicit that learning is a process, and mastery does not come by immediately. We all need some support!
